In the 21st century, our lives are no longer confined to a single country. My own life has taken me across different countries and through many new beginnings.
I grew up in Korea, studied in Japan, and conducted research in the United Kingdom. I then returned to Korea and took on new challenges before spending fifteen years in the Philippines. After returning to Korea once again, another opportunity took me to Abu Dhabi. Now, back in Korea, I am beginning a new chapter of my life.
Dr. Ryu’s Second Life is a place where I record and share the experiences, lessons, and reflections gathered along the way, while continuing to shape a new chapter of my life.
Looking back, crossing borders was never simply about moving from one country to another. It meant meeting new people, experiencing different cultures, facing unexpected challenges, and finding new paths forward.
The Journey So Far, and a New Beginning
Life does not always follow a path that has been planned in advance.
Korea → Japan → United Kingdom → Korea → Philippines → Korea → Abu Dhabi → Korea Again
Study and research, education and university administration, business and new challenges—experiences across different places and stages of life have shaped who I am today. There were choices that seemed right at the time, moments when life moved in directions I had never expected, and experiences whose meaning became clear only years later.
Now I want to look back on that journey, record the life I have lived, and explore how those experiences can become part of the life still ahead.

Smile, Ask, and See Again
There is more than one way to understand another country and culture. What seems perfectly ordinary to us can appear unfamiliar, surprising, or amusing to someone from another culture. A small difference can bring a smile, and that smile often leads naturally to a question.
Why is that?
Following that question can reveal that behind what first seemed simply amusing lies something deeper—the history, culture, language, and values of a society. Explore Asia offers two ways to discover Korea, Japan, and the Philippines.

The journey begins with the amusing moments of everyday life that appear when different cultures meet. The purpose is not to make another culture the object of a joke, but to use the curiosity created by small cultural differences as a way to understand everyday life and culture more closely.

Beginning with questions that international readers may genuinely wonder about, the series takes a deeper look at each country’s history and society, culture and values, language and education, everyday life, and the changes it may face in the future.
A smile can be the doorway to curiosity, and a question can be the beginning of understanding.
Through these two paths—smiles and questions—I hope to make Korea, Japan, and the Philippines easier and more engaging to explore while respecting the differences that make each society unique.
Experience Can Become Another Beginning
Growing older does not necessarily mean that the possibilities for something new become fewer. The knowledge and experience accumulated over a lifetime, the people we have met, and even memories of success and failure can become valuable resources for what comes next. I, too, am learning again.
I am writing, building this website, learning to use new digital technologies and artificial intelligence, and taking on things I had never tried before. Rather than waiting until everything is perfectly prepared, I am learning by doing, correcting what does not work, and continuing to find new paths along the way.
The second chapter of life is not simply the end of the first. It is another beginning, built upon everything that came before.
And Sometimes, I Pause and Reflect
Moving forward is not the only part of life that matters. A line from a poem, an idea rediscovered in a classic such as The Analects, a new expression encountered while studying English, Japanese, or Chinese, a short quotation or prayer, or even a thought that comes quietly during an ordinary day can make us see life differently.
At first, I thought I would leave a reflection here every day. Over time, however, I came to believe that what matters is not posting something every day, but continuing to learn, think, and reflect over the long term. So rather than following a fixed schedule, I hope to add a reflection whenever I encounter an idea worth remembering or something I would like to share.
There is no need to search for grand answers. If one small thought can help us look at today’s life a little more deeply, that is enough.
A Story Still in Progress
Looking back, many chapters of my life have already passed. But my story is not finished. I am still learning, still encountering new questions, and still preparing for new beginnings. Recording the experiences of the past matters, but so does discovering how those experiences can become part of the life that lies ahead.
This website is not simply a place to present a finished story. It is also a record of the continuing process of learning, questioning, writing, reconsidering, and gradually shaping what comes next.
Dr. Ryu’s Second Life is a place to look back on the life I have lived, while also recording the second chapter that is still unfolding today.
Every journey becomes more meaningful when it is shared.

21세기 국제화 시대, 우리의 삶은 더 이상 한 나라 안에 머물지 않는다.
나의 삶도 여러 나라와 여러 번의 새로운 시작을 거쳐 왔다. 한국에서 성장하여 일본에서 공부하고, 영국에서 연구하였다. 다시 한국으로 돌아와 새로운 도전을 시작했고, 이후 필리핀에서 15년을 생활하였다. 다시 한국으로 돌아온 뒤에는 아부다비에서 또 다른 경험을 하였고, 이제 다시 한국에서 인생의 새로운 장을 시작하고 있다.
돌아보면 국경을 넘는다는 것은 단순히 다른 나라로 이동하는 것만을 의미하지 않았다. 새로운 환경에서 사람을 만나고, 다른 문화를 경험하고, 때로는 예상하지 못한 어려움을 겪으며 다시 길을 찾아가는 과정이었다.
Dr. Ryu’s Second Life는 그렇게 살아온 경험과 배움, 그리고 그 과정에서 얻은 생각을 기록하며 새로운 인생의 장을 만들어 가는 공간이다.
지나온 길, 그리고 새로운 시작
삶의 길은 처음부터 정해져 있지 않았다.
한국 → 일본 → 영국 → 한국 → 필리핀 → 한국 → 아부다비 → 그리고 다시 한국
공부와 연구, 교육과 대학행정, 사업과 새로운 도전까지 서로 다른 시간과 장소에서 경험한 일들이 지금의 나를 만들었다. 그때는 최선이라고 생각했던 선택도 있었고, 예상하지 못한 방향으로 삶이 흘러간 순간도 있었다. 시간이 지나고 나서야 비로소 이해하게 된 일들도 있다.
이제 그 길을 천천히 돌아보며 지나온 삶을 기록하고, 그 경험을 앞으로의 삶과 연결해 보고자 한다.
웃고, 질문하고, 다시 바라보다
서로 다른 나라와 문화를 이해하는 방법은 하나일 필요가 없다. 우리에게는 너무나 익숙한 일상이 다른 문화권의 사람에게는 낯설고 재미있게 보일 수 있다. 그 작은 차이에서 웃음이 생기고, 웃음 뒤에는 자연스럽게 하나의 질문이 따라온다.
왜 그럴까?

웃고, 궁금해하고, 그 이유를 알아가다
서로 다른 문화가 만날 때 생기는 재미있는 일상의 모습에서 이야기를 시작한다. 누군가의 문화를 웃음의 대상으로 삼는 것이 아니라, 작은 문화적 차이에서 생기는 호기심을 통해 그 나라의 생활과 문화를 조금 더 가까이 이해해 본다.
질문으로 이해하는 아시아

외국인들이 실제로 궁금해할 만한 질문을 출발점으로 각 나라의 역사와 사회, 문화와 가치관, 언어와 교육, 일상생활과 미래의 변화까지 조금 더 깊이 살펴본다. 웃음은 관심을 갖게 하는 입구가 되고, 질문은 이해를 시작하는 길이 된다. 웃음과 질문이라는 서로 다른 두 개의 길을 통해 한국·일본·필리핀을 조금 더 쉽고 흥미롭게, 그리고 서로의 차이를 존중하며 이해해 보고자 한다.
경험은 또 다른 시작이 될 수 있다
나이가 들어간다는 것이 새로운 가능성이 줄어드는 것만을 의미하지는 않을 것이다. 지금까지 살아오며 얻은 경험과 지식, 사람들과의 만남, 그리고 성공과 실패의 기억까지도 앞으로의 삶을 만들어 가는 새로운 자산이 될 수 있다. 나 역시 다시 배우고 있다. 글을 쓰고, 홈페이지를 만들고, 새로운 디지털 기술과 인공지능을 배우며 이전에는 해보지 않았던 일에 하나씩 도전하고 있다. 완벽하게 준비된 뒤 시작하는 것이 아니라, 배우면서 시작하고 부족하면 고치며 새로운 길을 찾아가고 있다.
인생 제2막은 제1막의 끝이 아니라, 그동안의 경험을 가지고 다시 시작하는 또 하나의 출발점이다.
그리고, 때로는 잠시 멈추어 생각한다
바쁘게 앞으로 나아가는 것만이 삶의 전부는 아닐 것이다. 한 편의 시에서 만난 문장, 논어를 비롯한 고전에서 다시 발견한 생각, 영어·일본어·중국어를 공부하며 만난 새로운 표현, 짧은 명언이나 기도, 그리고 평범한 하루 속에서 문득 떠오른 생각도 삶을 다시 바라보게 한다.
처음에는 이러한 기록을 매일 남기려고 생각했다. 그러나 중요한 것은 매일 무언가를 올리는 것이 아니라 배우고 생각하고 기록하는 일을 오래 이어가는 것이라는 생각을 하게 되었다. 그래서 정해진 일정에 맞추기보다 마음에 남는 생각이나 함께 나누고 싶은 배움이 있을 때 한 편씩 천천히 기록하고자 한다.
거창한 답을 찾기보다 오늘의 삶을 조금 더 깊이 바라볼 수 있는 작은 생각 하나를 남길 수 있다면 그것으로 충분하다.
아직도 현재 진행형인 이야기
지금까지 살아온 시간을 돌아보면 많은 이야기가 이미 지나갔다. 그러나 나의 이야기는 아직 끝나지 않았다. 여전히 새로운 것을 배우고, 새로운 질문을 만나고, 또 다른 시작을 준비하고 있다. 지나온 경험을 기록하는 일도 중요하지만, 그 경험을 앞으로의 삶과 어떻게 연결할 것인가를 찾아가는 일 역시 중요하다.
이 홈페이지 역시 완성된 결과물을 보여주기 위한 공간만은 아니다. 배우고, 질문하고, 기록하고, 때로는 다시 생각하면서 앞으로의 삶을 하나씩 만들어 가는 과정도 함께 담고자 한다.
Dr. Ryu’s Second Life는 지나온 삶을 돌아보는 공간이면서, 동시에 지금 이 순간에도 계속되고 있는 인생 제2막을 기록하는 공간이다.
