Dr. Ryu’s Second Life is not simply a place where I record the story of my life. As I write about what I have seen and learned while living in Korea, Japan, and the Philippines, the questions I have explored through research and education, the experiences I have gained through travel and life abroad, and the new things I am learning and attempting in the second chapter of my life, I also hope to exchange thoughts and experiences with the people who find their way here.
We are born in different places and follow different paths through life. Yet one person’s experience can sometimes give another person a new way of thinking, and a single question from someone else can open the door to a story I had never thought to tell. That is why I hope this website can become more than a place where people simply read what I have written. I hope it can also become a small meeting place where experiences, ideas, and stories connect.
If something you read here reminds you of your own experience, gives you a different perspective, or leaves you wanting to continue the conversation, please feel free to send me a message.
It does not have to be a question.
You might simply want to say, “I had a similar experience,” or share a different point of view: “I see this a little differently.” Suggestions for new topics and questions worth exploring together are always welcome. Sometimes, even a simple hello is more than enough.
Any Story Is Welcome
You may want to share your thoughts about the cultures and societies of Korea, Japan, or the Philippines, or tell me about your own experiences of travel, a month-long stay abroad, or many years of living in another country. You may wish to exchange ideas about research, education, the environment, or society. Or perhaps you are beginning something new after retirement or preparing for the second chapter of your own life and would like to share the questions, challenges, and experiences that come with it.
If something on this website has raised a question or if you notice something that may be incorrect, I would also be grateful to hear from you. Suggestions for new topics or subjects you would like to see covered in the future can help this website grow in a better direction.
But you do not need a particular reason to write.
Perhaps you happened to discover this website from somewhere in the world, read a single article, and found yourself remembering something from long ago. If so, you are welcome to tell me that story. Even if we have never met, I believe experiences and thoughts can connect people through a single sentence.

I Will Read Your Message Slowly, but with Care
I will try to read the messages sent through this page personally whenever possible. I may not always be able to reply immediately, and depending on the message, there may be times when I am unable to respond. Still, I never take for granted the fact that someone has taken the time to visit this website, read what I have written, and share a part of their own time and thoughts with me.
A good question may become the beginning of a new article. Someone else’s experience may lead me to reconsider the way I see the world. A brief comment may help me correct something on the website, or it may unexpectedly lead to an entirely new subject.
For that reason, rather than focusing on how quickly I respond, I want to place greater importance on not treating lightly the story that someone has taken the time to share.
May a Story That Begins Here Lead to Another
When I started Dr. Ryu’s Second Life, I was not thinking only about looking back and putting my past in order. I also wanted to reflect on what I have experienced while recording what I might still learn and what new things I might begin in the years ahead.
As I have continued adding stories to this website one by one, I have come to recognize something once again: experience does not remain only in the past. When an experience is written down, it comes alive again, and when someone else reads it, it can take on another meaning. Sometimes a mistake I once made may become a small source of help to someone else. A question I raise may even encourage another person to imagine a new beginning.
And the same can happen in the other direction.
The stories and questions of those who visit this website may become another opportunity for me to learn—and perhaps another new beginning.
So although this page appears at the end of the website, I do not think of it as the end of the story.
I hope that a story begun here will continue into someone else’s story, and that story, in turn, will lead to new encounters and new beginnings.

Dr. Ryu’s Second Life는 내가 살아온 이야기를 일방적으로 기록하기 위해 만든 공간만은 아니다. 한국과 일본, 필리핀에서 살아오며 보고 배운 것들, 연구와 교육을 통해 생각해온 문제들, 여행과 해외생활에서 얻은 경험, 그리고 인생의 두 번째 막에서 새롭게 배우고 도전하는 과정을 기록하면서 이곳을 찾는 사람들과 생각과 경험을 나누고 싶었다.
사람은 서로 다른 곳에서 태어나 서로 다른 길을 걸어간다. 하지만 한 사람의 경험이 때로는 다른 사람에게 새로운 생각의 계기가 되기도 하고, 누군가의 질문 하나가 내가 미처 생각하지 못했던 새로운 이야기를 시작하게 만들기도 한다. 그래서 이 홈페이지가 내가 쓴 글을 읽는 것으로 끝나는 공간이 아니라, 서로의 경험과 생각이 이어지는 작은 만남의 장소가 되었으면 한다.
이곳의 글을 읽다가 자신의 경험과 비슷한 이야기를 발견했거나, 다른 생각이 떠올랐거나, 조금 더 이야기해보고 싶은 것이 생겼다면 편하게 메시지를 보내도 좋다.
꼭 질문이 아니어도 좋다.
“나도 비슷한 경험을 했다”는 짧은 이야기도 좋고, “이 부분은 조금 다르게 생각한다”는 의견도 좋다. 새로운 주제에 대한 제안이나 함께 생각해보고 싶은 질문도 반갑다. 때로는 짧은 인사 한마디만으로도 충분하다.
어떤 이야기라도 좋습니다
한국과 일본, 필리핀의 문화와 사회에 관한 이야기도 좋고, 여행이나 한 달 살기, 오랜 해외생활에서 겪은 경험에 관한 이야기도 좋다. 연구와 교육, 환경과 사회에 관한 의견을 나눌 수도 있고, 은퇴 이후 새로운 일을 시작하거나 인생의 두 번째 막을 준비하면서 겪고 있는 고민과 경험을 들려주어도 좋다.
홈페이지의 글을 읽으면서 궁금했던 점이나 잘못된 부분을 발견했다면 알려주는 것도 감사한 일이다. 새로운 주제에 대한 제안이나 앞으로 다루었으면 하는 이야기가 있다면 그것 역시 이 공간을 더 좋은 방향으로 만들어가는 데 도움이 될 것이다.
하지만 특별한 이유가 없어도 괜찮다.

Dr. Ryu’s Second Life를 시작하면서 내가 지나온 시간을 정리하는 것만 생각했던 것은 아니다. 지금까지의 경험을 돌아보면서 동시에 앞으로 무엇을 배우고, 무엇을 새롭게 시작할 수 있을지도 기록하고 싶었다.
그리고 이곳에 하나씩 글을 쌓아가면서 다시 확인하게 된 것이 있다. 경험은 지나간 시간 속에만 머무는 것이 아니라는 점이다. 한 사람의 경험은 기록될 때 다시 살아나고, 누군가에게 읽힐 때 또 다른 의미를 얻는다. 때로는 내가 겪은 시행착오가 다른 사람에게 작은 도움이 될 수도 있고, 내가 던진 질문 하나가 누군가에게 새로운 시작을 생각하게 할 수도 있다.
그 반대도 마찬가지이다.
이 홈페이지를 찾아온 누군가의 이야기와 질문이 나에게 또 다른 배움과 새로운 시작이 될 수 있다.
그래서 이 페이지를 홈페이지의 마지막에 두지만, 이곳을 이야기의 끝이라고 생각하지 않는다.
이곳에서 시작된 이야기가 또 다른 사람의 이야기로 이어지고, 그 이야기가 다시 새로운 만남과 새로운 시작으로 이어지기를 바란다.
