Opening Question

Today, wherever you go in the world, it is easy to find young people who grew up watching Japanese anime or reading Japanese manga.

Works such as Pokémon, Dragon Ball, One Piece, Naruto, and the films of Studio Ghibli have crossed national borders and captured the hearts of millions. Japanese video games, music, and fashion have also become familiar parts of youth culture around the world.

How did Japanese popular culture overcome differences in language and geography to become a global cultural phenomenon?

A Short Answer

Japanese popular culture did not achieve worldwide success simply because it produced entertaining content.

Its global influence was built on decades of creative storytelling, memorable characters, high production quality, and universal themes that resonate with people of all ages and cultures.

Today, Japanese anime, manga, and video games are no longer merely forms of entertainment. They have become an important part of contemporary global culture.

Understanding the Background

Following World War II, Japan experienced rapid economic growth, which was accompanied by significant investment in cultural industries such as publishing, animation, film, music, and video games.

In the 1960s, television anime such as Astro Boy introduced a new style of storytelling. Later, series such as Doraemon, Mobile Suit Gundam, and Dragon Ball gained enormous popularity not only in Japan but also abroad.

From the 1990s onward, Japan became a global leader in the video game industry through companies such as Nintendo, Sega, and Sony. Games like Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, and Pokémon became cultural icons recognized by multiple generations.

Today, streaming platforms and the internet have made Japanese animation, music, and games instantly accessible worldwide. Online communities have enabled fans from different countries to connect, creating new cultural exchanges beyond national borders.

A Closer Look

One of the most distinctive characteristics of Japanese popular culture is that it is not created solely for children.

Japanese manga and anime explore a wide range of themes, including friendship, family, personal growth, sacrifice, justice, environmental issues, and the value of life. As a result, they appeal not only to children but also to teenagers and adults.

Another defining feature is the way a single character or story expands into multiple forms of media. A successful manga may become an animated series, a feature film, a video game, a novel, a line of merchandise, or even a theme park attraction. This integrated approach to character development has influenced entertainment industries around the world.

In recent years, anime conventions, cosplay, Japanese language learning, and so-called “anime pilgrimages”—traveling to real locations featured in anime—have become increasingly popular in many countries.

Why Does This Matter Today?

Japanese popular culture has become far more than entertainment. It serves as one of Japan’s most effective cultural ambassadors.

Many young people first become interested in Japan through anime, manga, or video games. That interest often leads them to study the Japanese language, visit Japan, or even pursue academic opportunities there.

In this sense, Japanese popular culture has become one of the country’s most influential forms of soft power, fostering international understanding while also contributing to tourism, education, and the creative economy.

Dr. Ryu’s Insight

When I first went to Japan as an international student, the internet and streaming services had not yet become part of everyday life as they are today. Even so, manga and anime were already deeply woven into the daily lives of Japanese students.

As time passed, Japanese popular culture spread rapidly beyond Japan to the rest of Asia and eventually to the wider world. Later, while teaching at a university in the Philippines, I often saw students enthusiastically discussing Japanese anime and video games. Watching students from Korea, the Philippines, and Japan share the same characters and stories convinced me that culture has the power to transcend both language and national borders.

What I found especially interesting was that many young people became interested in Japan not through history textbooks or classroom lessons, but through anime and games. Some began learning Japanese because of the animation they loved, while others dreamed of visiting the cities and places that appeared in their favorite stories.

Today, we can observe a similar phenomenon with Korea. Many young people around the world have developed an interest in Korea through BTS, K-pop, Korean dramas, and films. Inspired by these cultural experiences, many choose to study the Korean language or dream of traveling to Korea. In this respect, Japanese popular culture and today’s Korean Wave share something important in common: both demonstrate how culture can inspire curiosity about another country and become the first step toward deeper understanding.

Watching the global influence of Japanese popular culture has taught me that the true power of culture lies not simply in entertaining people, but in helping them understand and empathize with societies beyond their own. Although Japanese popular culture and the Korean Wave have followed different paths, both illustrate how culture can connect people across borders. In that sense, Japanese popular culture offers an important window into understanding contemporary Japan.

Read This Page in English ↑

Dr. Ryu’s Insight
