Why Do Korean Students Attend Private Academies After School?
Opening Question
One of the things that often surprises foreign visitors to Korea is seeing private academies still full of students late in the evening.
Even after regular school classes have ended, many students continue attending academies to study English, mathematics, science, music, art, and many other subjects.
Watching this, international visitors often ask,
“Why do Korean students go to private academies even after school is over?”
To understand this question, it is important to look at Korea’s educational culture, parents’ expectations, and the broader social environment.
A Short Answer
The primary reason many Korean students attend private academies after school is to gain additional learning opportunities and achieve their personal goals.
Many students use academies to reinforce what they learn in school or to improve subjects in which they need extra support.
Others attend to prepare for university entrance examinations or to develop skills in foreign languages, music, art, sports, or other specialized fields.
Of course, not every student attends a private academy.
Today, an increasing number of students also choose online learning or independent study.
Understanding the Background
For many years, Korean society has regarded education as one of the most important pathways to personal growth and future opportunities.
Many parents therefore try to provide their children with the best educational opportunities available.
Within this environment, private academies naturally developed as a complement to formal school education.
Today, academies offer much more than academic tutoring.
In addition to university entrance preparation, many provide courses in coding, artificial intelligence, debate, music, art, sports, and numerous other subjects.
Modern academies therefore support not only academic achievement but also students’ diverse interests and talents.
A Closer Look
International visitors sometimes ask, “Does this mean Korean students study too much?”
This is a question that is also widely discussed within Korea itself.
Many people believe that students need more time for rest, creativity, and personal development.
There are also continuing efforts to strengthen public education and reduce dependence on private education.
At the same time, private academies can provide valuable opportunities for students to strengthen weaker subjects or pursue their personal interests and dreams.
For that reason, it is helpful to understand both the advantages of private academies and the challenges they present.
What It Means for Understanding Korean Society
Private academies reflect how highly Korean society values education.
At the same time, they also reveal ongoing challenges related to educational competition and the cost of private education.
Today, Korea is making continuous efforts to place greater emphasis not only on academic performance but also on creativity, student well-being, and self-directed learning.
What I consider most important is not how many hours students spend studying, but what they learn and how they grow through their education.
The ultimate purpose of education is not simply achieving high examination scores.
It is helping individuals discover their potential and develop the ability to lead meaningful and fulfilling lives.
Dr. Ryu’s Insight
Whenever conversations turned to education, the subject of Korea’s private academies almost always came up.
Some foreign friends would say,
“I’m amazed that Korean students continue studying even after the school day has ended.”
Whenever this topic arose, I tried not to describe private academies simply as places for university entrance preparation.
While entrance examinations certainly influence Korean education, many students also attend academies to strengthen weaker subjects or pursue interests such as foreign languages, music, sports, or the arts.
One lesson I have learned from observing different educational systems is that every country seeks better ways to educate its younger generation.
The methods may differ according to each society’s culture and circumstances, but the goal is ultimately the same.
I believe Korea, too, is continuing its search for a better balance between academic achievement, personal growth, and the happiness of its students.

Dr. Ryu’s Insight
