How Much Confucian Influence Remains in Modern Korean Society?
Opening Question
Foreign visitors experiencing Korean manners and interpersonal relationships often ask, “Is Korea still strongly influenced by Confucianism?” or “Do younger Koreans still consider Confucian values important?”
It can seem surprising that ideas developed centuries ago continue to influence Korea, a modern country known for its skyscrapers and advanced technology. How much Confucian influence, then, remains in Korean society today?
A Short Answer
Confucianism can no longer be described as the dominant philosophy governing Korean society. Nevertheless, its influence remains visible in respect for elders, the importance attached to family, and everyday customs that emphasise courtesy and consideration for others.
At the same time, traditional attitudes associated with strict authority and excessive hierarchy have gradually weakened, while values such as personal freedom and respect for diversity have spread rapidly.
Modern Korea is therefore better understood not simply as a Confucian society, but as a society that has modernised while retaining elements of its Confucian cultural heritage.
Understanding the Background
For approximately five centuries during the Joseon dynasty, Confucianism provided the fundamental principles governing politics, education, family organisation, and interpersonal relationships. Filial piety, respect for teachers and elders, and responsibility toward the wider community became deeply rooted in Korean life.
Korean society changed significantly through industrialisation, democratisation, and globalisation. Awareness of individual rights, gender equality, and diversity expanded, while some customs that had once been accepted without question began to change in response to new social values.
Even so, traces of Confucian tradition remain visible in everyday practices such as using honorific language, greeting elders first, and gathering with family members during major holidays.
A Closer Look
International visitors sometimes ask, “Does that mean all Koreans still live according to Confucian principles?”
Not necessarily.
Younger generations, in particular, place greater importance on personal choice and autonomy, and increasingly prefer more equal relationships within families and workplaces. Nevertheless, courtesy and respect for others continue to be regarded as important values by many Koreans.
Modern Korea can therefore be understood not as a society in which tradition and modernity simply compete, but as one in which they continually influence each other and create new cultural patterns.
What It Means for Understanding Korean Society
Understanding the influence of Confucianism makes it much easier to understand Korean language, interpersonal relationships, family culture, and etiquette. The importance given to age, the development of honorific speech, and customs that show consideration for elders are all connected to this historical tradition.
What matters to me is not preserving every tradition exactly as it once existed, but allowing tradition to develop in ways appropriate to the present. Not every inherited custom must be maintained, but the principles of respecting people and showing consideration for others remain worth carrying forward.
Cultures change, but the valuable ideas within them can survive in new forms as society enters a different era.
Dr. Ryu’s Insight
While living overseas, I was asked several times by foreign friends, “Is Korea still a Confucian country?”
I would usually explain, “It is difficult to describe Korea today as a Confucian country. It is more accurate to say that Korea is a society influenced by Confucian culture.”
The Korea I experienced in my childhood was very different from the Korea of today. Authoritarian attitudes have weakened, and younger generations place much greater importance on individuality, personal fulfilment, and diversity.
Even so, respect for parents and elders, along with the desire to treat others with courtesy and consideration, can still be found throughout Korean society.
At times, however, I feel disappointed when courtesy is treated as a matter of empty formality or when people use age alone to assert authority over others. I believe traditions survive longer when they are allowed to evolve with the times.
I hope Korea will become a society in which tradition and modernity do not simply conflict, but instead contribute their strengths to the development of a more mature culture.

Dr. Ryu’s Insight
