Opening Question

After more than three centuries of Spanish colonial rule, the Philippines came under American control following the Spanish-American War of 1898. American rule continued for nearly half a century and left a lasting influence on Philippine education, politics, government, language, and culture.

Many features of contemporary Philippine society—including the widespread use of English, the public education system, democratic institutions, and popular culture—have roots in this period. How did American rule transform the Philippines, and where can its influence still be seen today?

A Short Answer

American rule had a profound influence on the development of public education, English-language instruction, democratic political institutions, and modern public administration in the Philippines. American culture and ways of life also became deeply embedded in Philippine society, leaving visible traces that remain today.

At the same time, American rule was a form of colonial domination. Although it introduced modern institutions and contributed to social and administrative change, it also restricted Philippine sovereignty and delayed full political independence. Both modernization and colonial control must therefore be considered when assessing its historical legacy.

Understanding the Background

Following the Spanish-American War of 1898, Spain ceded the Philippines to the United States. The transition did not bring immediate independence. Instead, it led to armed conflict between Filipino forces seeking sovereignty and the new American colonial government. The Philippines remained under American rule until independence was formally recognized in 1946, although the Japanese occupation interrupted American administration during the Second World War.

One of the most significant changes introduced during the American period was the expansion of public education. English became the principal language of instruction, and American teachers known as the Thomasites were sent throughout the country to help establish schools and train Filipino teachers. This policy laid an important foundation for the widespread use of English in the Philippines today.

The United States also influenced the development of representative government, local administration, the judicial system, and the civil service. Filipinos gradually gained greater participation in public institutions, although ultimate authority remained in American hands throughout much of the colonial period.

American influence extended well beyond government and education. Basketball, baseball, Hollywood films, popular music, fast food, and other elements of American consumer culture became increasingly familiar parts of everyday Philippine life.

However, these changes occurred within a colonial system. The introduction of modern institutions did not erase the realities of military conflict, political inequality, and restricted national sovereignty. Understanding American rule therefore requires examining both the institutions it helped establish and the limitations imposed by colonial power.

A Closer Look

First, American rule brought fundamental changes to the Philippine education system. Public schools expanded rapidly, English became the primary language of instruction, and the arrival of the Thomasites helped establish a nationwide system of modern education. This educational legacy remains one of the most visible influences of the American period.

Second, the United States introduced democratic institutions, local government, a modern judicial system, and a professional civil service. Although political authority ultimately remained under American control during the colonial period, many of these institutions continued after Philippine independence and still form the foundation of the country’s political system today.

Third, American influence extended far beyond politics and education. Sports such as basketball and baseball, popular music, Hollywood films, fast food, and shopping culture all became familiar parts of everyday Filipino life. These cultural influences remain highly visible throughout the country.

Finally, American rule did not erase Filipino identity. Instead, Filipinos gradually adapted many foreign influences while preserving their own language, family-centered values, religious traditions, and local customs. Modern Philippine society is therefore best understood as a unique blend of indigenous, Spanish, American, and other Asian influences.

What It Means for Understanding Philippine Society

Understanding contemporary Philippine society is difficult without recognizing the legacy of American rule. The widespread use of English, democratic institutions, public education, and many aspects of daily life all reflect changes introduced during this period.

At the same time, the Philippines is not simply a society shaped by American influence. Rather, Filipinos have absorbed foreign ideas while adapting them to their own history, traditions, and cultural identity. This ability to integrate outside influences without losing a distinct national character remains one of the defining features of Philippine society.

Dr. Ryu’s Insight

One of the places where I most clearly felt the influence of the United States was not in history books, but in everyday life. Filipinos seemed to enjoy fast-food restaurants such as McDonald’s and Jollibee, and it was almost impossible to walk through a neighborhood without seeing children or young adults playing basketball. These ordinary scenes reminded me how deeply American culture has become part of daily life in the Philippines.

Recently, my wife and I traveled through the eastern United States and Canada. As I walked through several American shopping malls, I was surprised by how familiar they felt. In many ways, they reminded me of the large shopping malls I had frequently visited in the Philippines. Of course, Philippine malls are not simply copies of American ones. Rather, they appear to have adopted aspects of American retail culture while evolving into multi-purpose community spaces suited to the Philippine climate and family-oriented lifestyle, where people gather not only to shop but also to dine, relax, watch movies, attend events, and spend time together.

I also came to feel that, although Filipinos are fellow Asians, they often display a social outlook that differs somewhat from that of many East Asian societies. Their willingness to communicate openly, express their opinions, and interact comfortably in English may reflect part of the American influence. At the same time, however, they continue to place tremendous importance on family relationships, close-knit communities, and respect for personal connections. It is this combination of openness and strong family values that, in my view, gives Philippine society its distinctive character.

Ultimately, I believe that American rule left a profound mark on the Philippines, but it did not replace the country’s own identity. Living in the Philippines taught me that Filipinos have an exceptional ability to embrace outside influences while preserving the traditions and values that make their society uniquely their own.

Read This Page in English ↑

Dr. Ryu’s Insight
