How Is Korea’s Company-Dinner Culture Changing?

Opening Question

International professionals working in Korea are often invited to join company dinners after work. In the past, it was common for managers and employees to share meals and drinks together in an informal setting. Today, however, visitors frequently hear that Korea’s company-dinner culture is changing.

As a result, many ask, “Are company dinners still important in Korea?” or “Are employees expected to attend every gathering?”

Company dinners remain an important part of Korean workplace culture, but their purpose and style have evolved considerably over time.

A Short Answer

Korea’s company-dinner culture traditionally developed as a way to strengthen teamwork, build trust, and encourage communication outside the workplace. In recent years, however, it has gradually shifted toward respecting employees’ personal time, individual preferences, and work-life balance.

Rather than disappearing, company dinners are becoming more voluntary, flexible, and diverse in form.

Understanding the Background

For many years, Korean organisations placed strong emphasis on teamwork and group cohesion. Sharing meals after work was considered an effective way to build personal relationships that could improve cooperation during working hours.

Company dinners also provided opportunities for senior and junior colleagues to communicate more freely than they could in formal office settings.

Today, however, younger generations tend to place greater value on personal time and family life. As a result, many organisations have reduced mandatory participation, shortened evening gatherings, and introduced alternatives such as lunch meetings, coffee gatherings, or team-building activities that do not revolve around drinking.

A Closer Look

International visitors sometimes ask, “Will employees be disadvantaged if they do not attend company dinners?”

In the past, some employees certainly felt that participation was expected.

Today, however, many companies make greater efforts to respect individual choice. Drinking alcohol is far less likely to be encouraged than it once was, and employees are increasingly free to decide whether or not to attend social gatherings.

Although practices still differ between organisations, the overall direction is clearly moving toward greater flexibility and respect for personal preferences.

What It Means for Understanding Korean Society

The changing nature of company dinners reflects broader social changes taking place in Korea.

While previous generations often placed greater emphasis on organisational loyalty and collective responsibility, today’s workplace culture increasingly values diversity, mutual respect, and a healthier balance between work and private life.

What matters most, in my view, is not the company dinner itself, but the opportunity it creates for people to build trust and communicate openly. Shared meals continue to have value when participation is voluntary and relationships are built through genuine respect rather than obligation.

Dr. Ryu’s Insight

Having lived and worked in different cultural environments, I have come to appreciate that every society builds workplace relationships in its own way. Some cultures maintain a clear distinction between professional and personal life, while others see informal gatherings as a natural extension of teamwork.

In Korea, I have often found that sharing a meal allows people to speak more openly than they would in a formal meeting. Conversations become more relaxed, misunderstandings are reduced, and colleagues often come to understand one another on a more personal level.

At the same time, I have also seen attitudes change over the years. Younger generations place greater importance on personal time, and organisations are increasingly recognising that genuine teamwork cannot be created through obligation alone.

To me, the future of Korea’s company-dinner culture is not about preserving old customs or abandoning them altogether. It is about creating opportunities for meaningful human connection while respecting each person’s choices and work-life balance. When that balance is achieved, both organisations and individuals benefit.

Read This Page in English ↑

Dr. Ryu’s Insight
