Beginning the Second Chapter of Life
Dr. Ryu’s Second Life is a place to record the life I have lived while carrying those experiences forward into new learning, new challenges, and the second chapter of my life.
Over nearly sixty years, I have studied, conducted research, taught, worked, and run a business in different countries, meeting people from many different backgrounds along the way. At times, I followed the path I had planned. At other times, life took me somewhere entirely unexpected and asked me to begin again.
I grew up in Korea and later completed my master’s and doctoral studies in Japan, followed by research experience in the United Kingdom. After returning to Korea, I continued to take on new challenges before spending fifteen years in the Philippines, where I worked as a university professor, dean, and vice president while also running an online English education business. After returning to Korea once again, another opportunity took me to Abu Dhabi. And now, back in Korea, I am writing a new chapter of my life—my Second Life.
Looking back, my life has been less about staying in one place and more about continuously learning through new environments, cultures, and people across borders.
Now I want to look back on that journey, record the experiences that shaped my life, and consider how they might take on new meaning in the years ahead.
Why I Created This Website
We accumulate countless experiences as we go through life. But experiences that are never recorded can gradually fade from memory.
Over the years, I have lived in different countries, worked in different fields, met many people, and accumulated experiences that once seemed simply part of everyday life. Looking back, however, I have come to realize that some of those seemingly ordinary moments offer important clues to understanding the life I have lived. As I entered the second chapter of my life, one of the things I most wanted to do was properly record the journey that had brought me here. But I did not want this website to become simply a personal memoir.
I wanted to revisit Korea, Japan, and the Philippines—the three Asian countries I have experienced most closely—and explore them together with others. I also wanted to share thoughts and experiences related to the subjects I have studied, researched, and reflected on over many years, while recording what I might still learn and what new possibilities I might pursue in a world of rapidly changing technologies and ideas.
Looking back on the past and preparing for the future may not be two separate things. Perhaps one way to prepare for a new beginning is to understand more clearly what our past experiences have taught us.
That idea became the starting point for Dr. Ryu’s Second Life.
A Journey Across Borders
Several countries are woven into the story of my life.
Korea is where I was born and raised, and where the foundations of my life were formed. After graduating from high school in Daegu, I studied Ocean Engineering at Pukyong National University in Busan. Studying ocean engineering broadened my interest in the academic world and led me to begin considering new possibilities that would eventually take me to graduate study in Japan and a career in research.
Japan is where I began to walk the path of an academic and researcher in earnest. I completed my master’s and doctoral studies there, studying in a new language and culture and spending formative years developing as a researcher.
The United Kingdom gave me the opportunity to experience another academic environment and another way of looking at the world. As a postdoctoral researcher, I encountered a research culture and society quite different from what I had experienced in Japan.
The Philippines became another home in my life. I spent fifteen years there, beginning as a university professor and later serving as a dean and vice president while also running an online English education business. Those years gave me the opportunity not only to experience education, university administration, and business, but also to observe Philippine society and its people at close range.
Abu Dhabi offered yet another experience of working within a different culture and environment. Even after living in several countries, entering a new society and working in a new setting continued to bring new lessons.
Eventually, I returned once again to Korea.
These moves were never simply a record of traveling from one country to another. Through meeting people in different societies and cultures, adapting to unfamiliar environments, sometimes failing, and beginning again, my own ways of thinking and living gradually changed as well.
Seeing the World as a Researcher
Research has been an important part of my life.
I began by studying Ocean Engineering at university, but my academic interests gradually shifted toward the relationship between the environment and society. In graduate school, I studied environmental policy and environmental impact assessment, with my doctoral research focusing particularly on the role of environmental NGOs in the environmental impact assessment process.
Over the years, I have continued to take an interest in environmental policy, environmental impact assessment, public participation, consensus building, and the public and social acceptance of development projects.
Environmental issues cannot always be resolved through technology alone. Even when sound policies and institutions are in place, conflicts can arise if people are not adequately involved in the process or if social trust and consensus are lacking. My experience of living in different countries over many years has also influenced the way I think about these issues.
Through Dr. Ryu’s Second Life, I hope to introduce the subjects I have studied and researched, along with some of my major research achievements, while also sharing the thoughts and perspectives that have developed through that work.
Rediscovering Asia
I was born in Korea, spent many years studying in Japan, and lived in the Philippines for fifteen years. Through those experiences, I came to see firsthand how differently societies and cultures can develop even within the same region of Asia. Things that initially seemed unfamiliar often became understandable once I learned more about the history and social background behind them. At the same time, I realized that aspects of Korean culture that seemed completely ordinary to me could appear unfamiliar—and sometimes amusing—to someone from another culture.
These experiences and observations became the starting point for Explore Asia. Explore Asia does not try to understand Korea, Japan, and the Philippines through a single approach. Sometimes the journey begins with a small moment of humor in everyday life. At other times, a question leads us deeper into the history and culture of a society.
The first doorway is Asia with a Smile. Here, we encounter Korea, Japan, and the Philippines through amusing, surprising, and sometimes unexpected aspects of everyday life. Something may initially make a visitor smile and wonder, “Why do they do that?” But the purpose is never to make another culture the object of a joke. Instead, the curiosity that follows that smile becomes an opportunity to discover the cultural reasons behind a particular behavior, custom, or way of life. A smile can be a light and enjoyable first step toward discovering another culture.
From there, curiosity leads to a deeper journey through Understanding Asia Through Questions. There are 100 questions about Korea, 100 about Japan, and 100 about the Philippines—300 questions in total. Through these questions, I explore each country’s history and society, culture and values, language and education, everyday life, and the changes and challenges that may shape its future. Rather than simply listing facts about each country or comparing one society with another, the series begins with questions that international readers may genuinely ask and follows each one toward a deeper understanding of why things are the way they are.
What begins as a small smile or moment of curiosity can eventually lead us to look at a society in a very different—and much deeper—way. A smile opens the door to curiosity, and a question begins the journey toward understanding. Through these two paths, I hope to move beyond simply seeing the differences among Korea, Japan, and the Philippines as something unfamiliar, and instead explore where those differences come from and how they can help us understand one another more closely.
Experience Can Become Another Beginning
Growing older does not necessarily mean that the possibilities for something new become fewer. The knowledge and experience accumulated over many years, the people we have met, and even our memories of success and failure can become valuable resources for beginning something new. I, too, am learning again in this second chapter of my life.
I am writing online, building a website, learning to use AI, and creating digital content—organizing and sharing my experiences and knowledge in ways I had never imagined before. I did not begin with all the answers. I am learning one step at a time, correcting mistakes when they happen, and trying again.
That is why I do not want this website to record only finished success stories. The process of learning, the trial and error, the small achievements, and even the failures are all part of my Second Life, and I want to record them as they happen.
If someday these records can offer even a small point of reference to someone at a similar stage of life who is considering a new beginning, I believe they will have served a meaningful purpose.
Learning a Little Every Day
Another thing I value in this second chapter of life is continuing to learn. Learning does not always have to mean serious or formal study. Reading a poem, reflecting again on a passage from an old classic, learning a new expression in English, Japanese, or Chinese, or encountering a sentence that makes me pause and think about life—all of these can be forms of learning. There are also times to record gratitude, to pray, and to look back quietly on an ordinary day.
Daily Reflection is a space for those small moments of learning, reflection, and thought. Perhaps continuing to learn matters more than how much we learn.
Principles I Hope to Follow
Dr. Ryu’s Second Life will naturally contain many of my personal experiences and thoughts. But I do not want to judge other societies or people solely through the lens of my own experience. In particular, when writing about the history, society, and culture of Korea, Japan, and the Philippines, I try to consult reliable sources whenever possible and to distinguish factual information from personal experience and interpretation. I also try not to idealize a country or portray it too negatively, and I do not view cultural differences as questions of superiority or inferiority.
Societies are constantly changing. Information that is accurate today may change with time. When new information or significant changes emerge, I intend to revise and update existing articles as necessary. Above all, I want this website to remain not a place for displaying finished knowledge, but a place that continues to grow through learning.
If I discover that I have misunderstood something, I can correct it. If I encounter new facts or perspectives, I can learn again.
Sharing the Second Journey
Dr. Ryu’s Second Life is not a project that ends with looking back on the life I have already lived. My journey is not over. There is still much I want to learn and much I would like to try. Recording past experiences, understanding the different societies and cultures of Asia, sharing my research and thoughts, learning new technologies, and reflecting on everyday life may seem like separate activities, but they all lead in the same direction.
It is about carrying what I have learned from the life behind me into the life that still lies ahead.
This website, too, will not remain a place for presenting finished knowledge. New stories will be added, ideas may be revised as my thinking changes, and new experiences may lead to entirely new stories. In this way, Dr. Ryu’s Second Life will continue to grow alongside the second chapter of my life. And I hope to share that continuing journey with those who visit this website.

인생 제2막을 시작하며
Dr. Ryu’s Second Life는 한 사람의 지나온 삶을 기록하는 공간이면서, 그 경험을 새로운 배움과 도전으로 이어 가는 인생 제2막의 기록이다.
60여년의 시간을 살아오면서 여러 나라에서 공부하고, 연구하고, 가르치고, 일하고, 사업하며 다양한 사람들을 만났다. 때로는 계획했던 길을 걸었고, 때로는 전혀 예상하지 못했던 곳에서 새로운 삶을 시작하기도 했다.
한국에서 성장하여 대학을 졸업한 뒤 일본에서 석사와 박사과정을 거쳤고, 영국에서 연구 경험을 쌓았다. 한국으로 돌아와 새로운 도전을 이어 갔으며, 이후 필리핀에서 15년 동안 대학 교수와 학장, 부총장으로 일하고 온라인 영어교육 사업도 운영했다. 다시 한국으로 돌아온 뒤에는 또 다른 기회로 아부다비에서 일했으며, 지금은 한국으로 돌아와 인생 제2막이라는 새로운 장을 써 내려가고 있다..
돌아보면 나의 삶은 한곳에 머무르는 삶이라기보다 국경을 넘어 새로운 환경과 사람들을 만나며 끊임없이 배우는 과정이었다. 이제 그 길을 천천히 돌아보며 지나온 경험을 기록하고, 그 경험이 앞으로의 삶에서 어떤 새로운 의미를 가질 수 있는지 생각해 보고자 한다.
왜 이 홈페이지를 만들었는가?
사람은 살아가면서 많은 것을 경험한다. 그러나 기록하지 않은 경험은 시간이 지나면서 조금씩 기억에서 사라진다.
나 역시 오랫동안 여러 나라에서 생활하고 다양한 일을 하면서 많은 사람을 만나고 수많은 경험을 했다. 그 순간에는 중요하지 않다고 생각했던 일들이 시간이 지나 돌아보니 오히려 삶을 이해하는 중요한 단서가 되기도 했다. 그래서 인생의 제2막을 준비하면서 가장 먼저 하고 싶었던 일 가운데 하나가 지금까지 살아온 삶을 제대로 기록하는 것이었다.
하지만 이 홈페이지를 단순한 개인 회고록으로 만들고 싶지는 않았다. 내가 경험한 한국과 일본, 필리핀을 다른 사람들과 함께 다시 살펴보고, 오랫동안 연구하고 고민해 온 주제에 대한 생각과 경험을 나누며, 새로운 기술과 변화 속에서 앞으로 무엇을 배우고 무엇을 할 수 있을지도 함께 기록하고 싶었다.
과거를 정리하는 일과 미래를 준비하는 일은 서로 다른 일이 아닐 수 있다. 지나온 경험을 제대로 돌아보는 것이 새로운 시작을 준비하는 또 하나의 방법이라고 생각한다.
그 생각에서 Dr. Ryu’s Second Life가 시작되었다.
국경을 넘어 이어진 나의 여정
나의 삶에는 여러 나라가 연결되어 있다.
한국은 내가 태어나고 성장하며 삶의 기초를 만든 곳이다. 대구에서 고등학교를 졸업한 뒤 부산에 있는 부경대학교에서 해양공학을 공부했다. 해양공학을 전공하면서 학문의 세계에 관심을 넓혀 갔고, 이후 일본 유학과 연구자의 길로 이어지는 새로운 가능성을 생각하기 시작했다.
일본은 학문과 연구자의 길을 본격적으로 걸었던 곳이다. 대학원에서 석사와 박사과정을 거치며 새로운 언어와 문화 속에서 공부했고, 연구자로 성장하는 데 중요한 시간을 보냈다.
영국은 또 다른 연구환경과 세계를 경험한 곳이다. 박사후연구원으로 생활하면서 일본과는 다른 학문적 환경과 문화를 접할 수 있었다.
필리핀은 나에게 또 하나의 삶의 터전이었다. 15년이라는 긴 시간을 보내며 대학 교수로 시작하여 학장과 부총장으로 일했고, 온라인 영어교육 사업도 운영했다. 교육과 대학행정, 사업을 경험하는 동시에 필리핀 사회와 사람들을 가까이에서 바라볼 수 있었던 시간이었다.
아부다비에서는 또 다른 문화와 환경 속에서 일하는 경험을 했다. 이미 여러 나라에서 생활한 뒤였지만 새로운 나라에서 일한다는 것은 여전히 새로운 배움이었다.
그리고 다시 한국으로 돌아왔다.
이 모든 이동은 단순히 나라를 옮겨 다닌 기록만은 아니다. 서로 다른 사회와 문화 속에서 사람을 만나고, 새로운 환경에 적응하고, 때로는 실패하고 다시 시작하면서 나 자신의 생각과 삶의 방식도 조금씩 달라졌다.
연구자로서 바라본 세상
나의 삶에서 연구는 중요한 부분을 차지해 왔다. 대학에서는 해양공학을 공부했지만, 이후 환경과 사회의 관계에 관심을 가지면서 연구의 방향도 변화했다. 대학원에서는 환경정책과 환경영향평가를 공부했고, 특히 환경영향평가 과정에서 환경 NGO가 어떤 역할을 하는지를 박사논문의 주제로 연구했다.
그 이후에도 환경정책, 환경영향평가, 주민참여, 합의형성, 그리고 개발사업에 대한 주민수용성과 사회적 수용성 문제에 지속적으로 관심을 가져왔다. 환경문제는 기술만으로 해결할 수 있는 문제가 아니다. 좋은 정책과 제도가 있어도 그 과정에서 사람들의 의견이 충분히 반영되지 않거나 사회적 신뢰와 합의가 형성되지 않으면 갈등이 발생할 수 있다.
오랫동안 여러 나라에서 생활한 경험은 이러한 문제를 바라보는 나의 시각에도 영향을 주었다.
Dr. Ryu’s Second Life에서는 지금까지 내가 관심을 가지고 공부하고 연구해 온 주제와 주요 연구 성과를 정리하여 소개하고, 그 과정에서 형성된 생각과 관점도 함께 나누고자 한다.
아시아를 다시 이해하다
한국에서 태어나고, 일본에서 오랫동안 공부하고, 필리핀에서 15년 동안 생활하면서 나는 같은 아시아 안에서도 사회와 문화가 얼마나 다르게 형성될 수 있는지를 직접 경험했다. 처음에는 낯설게 느껴졌던 행동도 그 나라의 역사와 사회적 배경을 알고 나면 이해되는 경우가 많았다. 반대로 내가 당연하다고 생각했던 한국의 문화도 외국인의 눈에는 매우 낯설고 때로는 재미있게 보일 수 있다는 사실을 알게 되었다. 이러한 경험과 생각에서 Explore Asia가 시작되었다.
Explore Asia에서는 한국·일본·필리핀을 한 가지 방식으로만 이해하려 하지 않는다. 때로는 일상의 작은 웃음에서 시작하고, 때로는 하나의 질문을 따라 그 사회의 역사와 문화 속으로 조금 더 깊이 들어간다.
먼저 Asia with a Smile에서는 한국·일본·필리핀의 일상에서 발견할 수 있는 재미있고 때로는 의외인 모습을 통해 세 나라를 만난다. 다른 문화권의 사람에게는 “왜 저렇게 할까?”라는 생각과 함께 웃음이 나올 수 있지만, 그 모습을 단순히 웃음의 대상으로 삼는 것이 목적은 아니다. 웃음 뒤에 자연스럽게 따라오는 “왜 그럴까?”라는 궁금증에서 출발하여 그 행동과 생활방식 뒤에 숨어 있는 문화적 이유를 찾아가고자 한다. 웃음은 다른 문화를 만나는 가볍고 즐거운 첫걸음이 될 수 있다.
그리고 그 호기심을 조금 더 깊은 이해로 이어 가는 것이 질문으로 이해하는 아시아이다. 한국 100개, 일본 100개, 필리핀 100개, 총 300개의 질문을 통해 각 나라의 역사와 사회, 문화와 가치관, 언어와 교육, 일상생활과 미래의 변화까지 폭넓게 살펴본다. 단순히 국가에 관한 정보를 나열하거나 세 나라를 비교하는 데 그치지 않고, 해외 독자들이 실제로 궁금해할 만한 질문을 출발점으로 “왜 그런가?”를 하나씩 찾아가는 방식이다.
처음에는 작은 웃음과 호기심으로 시작했지만, 그 이유를 묻고 답을 찾아가다 보면 어느새 한 사회를 조금 더 깊이 바라보게 된다.
웃음은 호기심의 문을 열고, 질문은 이해를 시작하게 한다.
이 두 가지 길을 통해 한국·일본·필리핀의 차이를 단순히 낯설게 바라보는 데서 그치지 않고, 그 차이가 어디에서 비롯되었는지를 이해하며 서로의 문화를 조금 더 가까이 바라보고자 한다.
경험은 또 다른 시작이 될 수 있다
나이가 들어간다는 것이 반드시 새로운 가능성이 줄어든다는 의미는 아니라고 생각한다. 오랜 시간 쌓아 온 지식과 경험, 살아오며 만난 사람들, 그리고 성공과 실패의 기억도 새로운 삶을 시작하는 데 중요한 자산이 될 수 있다. 나 역시 인생 제2막에서 새로운 것을 배우고 있다.
온라인 공간에 글을 쓰고, 홈페이지를 만들고, AI를 활용하고, 디지털 콘텐츠를 만들며 과거에는 생각하지 못했던 방식으로 나의 경험과 지식을 정리하고 있다. 처음부터 모든 것을 알고 시작한 것은 아니다. 하나씩 배우고, 실수하면 고치고, 다시 시도하면서 만들어 가고 있다. 그래서 이 홈페이지에는 완성된 성공담만을 기록하려 하지 않는다.
배우는 과정, 시행착오, 작은 성취와 실패까지도 인생 제2막의 일부로 기록하고자 한다. 언젠가 이 기록들이 비슷한 시기에 새로운 시작을 고민하는 누군가에게 작은 참고가 될 수 있다면 그것만으로도 충분한 의미가 있다고 생각한다.
매일 조금씩 배우며
인생 제2막에서 중요하게 생각하는 또 하나는 계속 배우는 삶이다. 거창한 공부만을 의미하는 것은 아니다. 한 편의 시를 읽고, 오래된 고전의 한 구절을 다시 생각하고, 영어·일본어·중국어의 표현 하나를 익히고, 좋은 문장을 만나 잠시 삶을 돌아보는 것도 배움이라고 생각한다. 때로는 감사할 일을 기록하고, 기도하며 하루를 돌아보는 시간도 필요하다.
Daily Reflection은 그렇게 하루에 조금씩 배우고 생각하며 살아가기 위한 공간이다. 많이 배우는 것보다 배우는 일을 멈추지 않는 것이 더 중요할지도 모른다.
이 홈페이지에서 지키고 싶은 원칙
Dr. Ryu’s Second Life에는 개인적인 경험과 생각이 많이 담길 것이다. 그러나 개인적인 경험만으로 다른 사회와 사람을 판단하지 않으려고 한다. 특히 한국·일본·필리핀의 역사와 사회, 문화에 관한 글에서는 가능한 한 신뢰할 수 있는 자료를 확인하고, 사실과 개인적인 경험 또는 해석을 구분하려고 한다. 한 나라의 문화와 사회를 지나치게 이상화하거나 부정적으로 바라보지 않으며, 문화적 차이를 우열의 문제로 판단하지 않는 것도 중요한 원칙이다.
또한 사회는 계속 변한다. 지금은 맞는 정보도 시간이 지나면 달라질 수 있다. 새로운 자료나 변화가 확인되면 기존의 글도 계속 수정하고 보완할 것이다. 무엇보다 이 홈페이지를 완성된 지식을 보여주는 공간이 아니라 계속 배우며 만들어 가는 공간으로 남겨 두고 싶다. 잘못 이해한 부분이 있다면 수정하고, 새로운 사실을 알게 되면 다시 배우면 된다.
함께 나누는 두 번째 여정
Dr. Ryu’s Second Life는 지나온 삶을 정리하는 것으로 끝나는 프로젝트가 아니다. 나의 여정도 아직 끝나지 않았고, 배우고 싶은 것도 많으며, 해 보고 싶은 일도 남아 있다. 과거의 경험을 기록하는 일, 아시아의 서로 다른 사회와 문화를 이해하는 일, 연구와 생각을 나누는 일, 새로운 기술을 배우는 일, 그리고 매일의 삶을 돌아보는 일은 서로 다른 것처럼 보이지만 결국 하나의 방향으로 이어져 있다.
지나온 삶에서 배운 것을 앞으로의 삶과 연결하는 것이다.
이 홈페이지도 완성된 지식을 보여주는 공간으로 머물지 않을 것이다. 새로운 이야기가 더해지고, 생각이 달라지면 다시 고치며, 새로운 경험을 하게 되면 또 다른 이야기를 기록할 것이다. 그렇게 Dr. Ryu’s Second Life는 나의 인생 제2막과 함께 계속 성장하는 공간이 되고자 한다. 그리고 그 여정을 이곳을 찾아오는 사람들과 함께 나누고 싶다. 삶의 여정은 함께 나눌 때 더 큰 의미가 있다고 믿는다.
