Foreign visitors to Korea often notice robot servers in restaurants, self-checkout kiosks, AI translation services, and highly automated factories. These experiences naturally lead them to ask, “Will artificial intelligence replace many jobs in Korea?” or “What should today’s students study to prepare for the future?”
Artificial intelligence (AI) and automation have already become part of everyday life and industry in Korea. As these technologies continue to develop, many people wonder how they will reshape employment and education in the years ahead.
A Short Answer
Artificial intelligence and automation will certainly transform some occupations and reduce the demand for certain types of work. At the same time, however, they are also expected to create entirely new industries, professions, and opportunities.
The key challenge for the future is not whether humans compete with AI, but how humans and AI can work together to create new value.
Recognising this shift, Korea’s education system is gradually moving beyond simply delivering knowledge and placing greater emphasis on creativity, problem-solving, and digital competence.
Understanding the Background
Korea is widely recognised as one of the world’s leading countries in information technology and digital infrastructure. Building on this foundation, artificial intelligence and automation are being introduced rapidly across manufacturing, finance, healthcare, education, logistics, and many other sectors.
Routine and repetitive tasks are increasingly performed by machines and software, while people are expected to focus more on creative work, decision-making, communication, and innovation.
In response, both the government and educational institutions are expanding digital education and AI-related learning to prepare future generations for these changes.
A Closer Look
International visitors sometimes ask, “Does this mean many people will lose their jobs?”
Some occupations will undoubtedly experience significant change.
History shows, however, that major technological revolutions—from the Industrial Revolution to the rise of the internet—have not only replaced certain jobs but also created entirely new ones.
In the coming years, the ability to use artificial intelligence effectively may become one of the most valuable skills for both individuals and organisations.
Education is therefore expected to move further away from memorisation and place greater importance on asking meaningful questions, solving complex problems, and connecting knowledge across different disciplines.
What It Means for Understanding Korean Society
Understanding the age of artificial intelligence helps explain why Korea is investing simultaneously in digital innovation and educational reform.
Korea has repeatedly demonstrated an exceptional ability to adapt quickly to technological change, and this flexibility is likely to remain one of the country’s greatest competitive strengths.
What I consider most important is not artificial intelligence itself, but the people who use it.
Technology should not exist merely to replace human beings. Rather, it should expand human capabilities and improve the quality of our lives.
For that reason, I believe future education must place even greater emphasis on qualities that remain uniquely human—creativity, ethical judgement, empathy, and wisdom.
Dr. Ryu’s Insight
I have experienced education from several different perspectives—as a university professor, as the founder of an online English education company, and now as someone building the Dr. Ryu’s Second Life project together with AI.
These experiences have allowed me to witness how rapidly technology can transform the way we learn, work, and create.
Only a few years ago, writing a book or organising research materials required an enormous amount of time. Today, with the assistance of artificial intelligence, I can review a much wider range of information, develop ideas more efficiently, and create content in multiple languages.
Of course, every technological revolution brings new challenges. Some occupations will disappear, while continuous learning will become an essential part of life. Even so, I prefer to see these changes not as something to fear, but as opportunities to begin new journeys.
Artificial intelligence can never replace human experience, wisdom, or values. What it can do is help us make better use of them. That is precisely why I have chosen to embrace AI as a companion in my own second chapter of life.

인공지능과 자동화는 일부 직업을 변화시키거나 줄어들게 만들 수 있지만, 동시에 새로운 산업과 새로운 직업을 만들어 낼 가능성도 매우 크다.
앞으로 중요한 것은 사람과 인공지능이 경쟁하는 것이 아니라 함께 협력하며 새로운 가치를 만들어 내는 능력이다.
이러한 변화에 맞추어 한국의 교육도 단순한 지식 전달에서 벗어나 창의력과 문제 해결 능력, 디지털 활용 능력을 더욱 중요하게 생각하는 방향으로 변화하고 있다.
질문의 배경 이해하기
한국은 세계에서 정보통신 기술과 디지털 인프라가 가장 발달한 나라 가운데 하나이다. 이러한 기반 위에서 제조업과 금융, 의료, 교육, 물류 등 다양한 분야에서 인공지능과 자동화 기술이 빠르게 도입되고 있다.

한국 사회를 이해하는 데 어떤 의미가 있는가
인공지능 시대를 이해하면 한국 사회가 왜 디지털 혁신과 교육 개혁을 동시에 추진하고 있는지 이해할 수 있다. 한국은 빠르게 변화하는 기술 환경에 적응하는 능력이 뛰어난 나라이다. 이러한 장점은 앞으로도 국가 경쟁력을 유지하는 중요한 기반이 될 것이다.
내가 중요하게 생각하는 것은 인공지능 자체가 아니라 그것을 사용하는 사람이다.
기술은 사람을 대신하기 위해 존재하는 것이 아니라 사람의 능력을 더욱 확장하고 삶의 질을 높이기 위해 활용되어야 한다고 생각한다.
앞으로의 교육도 사람만이 할 수 있는 창의성과 윤리의식, 공감 능력을 더욱 중요하게 키워 나가야 할 것이다.

인공지능은 사람의 경험과 지혜를 대신할 수는 없지만, 그것을 더욱 가치 있게 활용하도록 돕는 훌륭한 동반자가 될 수 있다고 믿는다. 그래서 나 역시 인생 2막에서 AI와 함께 새로운 도전을 이어 가고 있다.
