Opening Question

One of the most fascinating expressions for people learning Korean is the word uri (우리).

One day, a Korean friend might say,

“Come and visit our house.”

A foreign listener often smiles and asks,

“Why do you say ‘our house’ when it’s actually your house?”

The same curiosity arises when people hear expressions such as “our mother,” “our company,” “our school,” or even “our husband” and “our wife.”

Why do Koreans naturally say uri in situations where English speakers would almost always use my?

A Short Answer

In Korean, uri often means much more than the English words we or our.

Rather than simply referring to multiple people, it frequently expresses a sense of belonging, closeness, and shared identity.

Even when something belongs to one individual, Koreans often use uri if it is closely connected to the family, community, or group to which they belong.

For this reason, the word helps create psychological closeness and reflects one of the most distinctive features of Korean communication.

Understanding the Background

For generations, Korean society has placed great importance on family and community.

A family has traditionally been understood not merely as people living together but as a community that shares everyday life.

This way of thinking naturally influenced language.

Expressions such as “our house” do not emphasise legal ownership.

Instead, they highlight the place where family members live together.

Likewise, “our school” or “our company” expresses a sense of belonging to a shared community rather than possession.

Seen from this perspective, uri is more than a grammatical expression.

It reflects a relationship-centred way of thinking that has developed throughout Korean culture.

A Closer Look

People sometimes ask, “Does that mean Koreans rarely say ‘my’?”

Not at all.

Words such as “my book,” “my opinion,” and “my idea” are used naturally whenever individual ownership or personal thoughts are being expressed.

However, when speaking about family members or communities to which they feel closely connected, many Koreans instinctively choose uri instead.

This habit continues even among younger generations.

It is not simply a linguistic pattern but a cultural expression that reflects warmth, belonging, and emotional connection.

What It Means for Understanding Korean Society

Understanding the meaning of uri offers valuable insight into Korean relationships and social values.

It helps explain why people naturally say “our mother” instead of “my mother,” or refer to “our company” even when speaking about their own workplace.

From my perspective, uri is not a word that diminishes individuality.

Instead, it reflects the importance of the relationships people cherish.

Every culture has its own way of expressing human connections.

In Korean, uri is one of the most beautiful expressions of the idea that our lives are enriched through the people with whom we share them.

Dr. Ryu’s Insight

Whenever I have talked with people from other countries about the Korean language, the word uri has almost always become part of the conversation.

One person once laughed and asked, “Why do Koreans call their own mother ‘our mother’?”

I explained that uri is much more than the grammatical equivalent of we.

It expresses a sense of belonging and emotional closeness to the people who are important in our lives.

Interestingly, I have also seen foreign friends gradually begin using expressions such as “our company” or “our neighbourhood” after spending time in Korea.

Moments like these remind me that learning a language is never only about vocabulary or grammar.

It is also about discovering the way people see one another and the relationships that shape their everyday lives.

Dr. Ryu’s Insight
