One of the questions I have heard increasingly often in recent years is,
“When did Korean cinema become so well known around the world?”
People who once knew very little about Korean films now naturally talk about movies such as Parasite, Train to Busan, and Oldboy.
Since Parasite won the Academy Award for Best Picture, international interest in Korean cinema has grown even further.
Yet the global success of Korean films cannot be explained by the achievements of a single movie.
It is the result of decades of creative storytelling, artistic excellence, and the continuous development of Korea’s film industry.

Korean cinema has earned international recognition because original storytelling, outstanding artistic quality, and the steady growth of the film industry have developed together over many years.

Perhaps even more importantly, Korean cinema developed a distinctive ability to combine realistic portrayals of society with compelling narratives and strong emotional depth.
Although many stories are deeply rooted in Korean society, the emotions they express—family, hope, sacrifice, injustice, and resilience—are universal.
This has enabled audiences from very different cultural backgrounds to connect with Korean films.

The answer is not that simple.
Every country has its own outstanding cinematic traditions, and Korea is one of many nations producing remarkable films.

Filmmakers are also encouraged to express their own creative vision, leading to a wide variety of original works.
Seen from this perspective, international recognition was not an overnight success.
It was the result of years of creative effort, artistic courage, and continuous innovation.
What It Means for Understanding Korean Society
Watching Korean films offers another way of understanding contemporary Korea.
Many films naturally reflect aspects of Korean history, family life, education, competition, urban living, and generational change.
Of course, films are works of art and often dramatise reality for storytelling purposes.
Even so, they provide valuable insights into the emotions, values, and social questions that shape Korean society.
What stands out most to me is not simply that Korean films have received international awards, but that they have encouraged people around the world to become more curious about Korea itself.
Culture has always been one of the most natural ways for people to understand one another, and Korean cinema continues to play an important role in building those connections.

In conversations about Korean culture, K-pop used to dominate the discussion.
Today, however, I find that Korean films are mentioned just as frequently.
I still remember one foreign friend saying after watching Parasite,

문화는 사람과 사람을 연결하는 가장 자연스러운 언어 가운데 하나이며, 한국 영화도 그러한 역할을 하고 있다고 생각한다.

외국인들과 한국 문화에 대해 이야기를 나누다 보면 예전에는 K-pop이 먼저 화제가 되는 경우가 많았지만, 최근에는 한국 영화를 이야기하는 사람들도 크게 늘어났다.
