Beginning Again with Prayer
I am not very good at praying.
Even though faith has long been part of my life, there are times when I try to pray and simply do not know how to begin. When I listen to others pray, their words seem to flow naturally and touch the heart. But when I try to pray on my own, I sometimes repeat the same few phrases and finish before I have truly expressed what is in my heart. Looking back, I do not think this is because I have no desire to pray. Rather, prayer has not yet become a natural habit in my daily life.
There have been many times when I turned earnestly to God in difficulty but forgot to pray when life was peaceful. There have been blessings I took for granted instead of receiving them with gratitude, and moments when I allowed the busyness of everyday life to carry me forward without stopping to reflect on my words, actions, and shortcomings.
That is why I created this space.
This is not a place where someone who is good at praying teaches others how to pray. Rather, it is a space for people like me—those who want to pray but have never quite made prayer a natural part of everyday life.
Perhaps you want to pray but hesitate because you do not know how to begin. Perhaps you remember prayer mainly when something goes wrong. Perhaps you feel deeply grateful but cannot quite find the words to express it. Or perhaps you have often wished to begin and end each day with prayer, yet have never managed to make it a habit. If so, I am not very different from you.
I am not here to teach anyone the right way to pray. I am beginning because I want prayer to become a little more present in my own life. And if there are others who feel the same way, perhaps we can begin slowly together.
If Prayer Can Become More Natural
Prayer cannot simply be compared to learning a skill. Still, I wonder whether it can become more natural when we spend time before God more often and learn to speak honestly about what is in our hearts.
There were times when I thought I needed special or beautiful words in order to pray well. That made it harder to begin, and sometimes I postponed praying altogether. Now I would rather stop worrying about praying well and simply begin by praying.
For that reason, I do not intend to collect a large number of prayers here. Instead, I want to begin with a few short prayers for the important moments that return again and again in ordinary life.
When a new day begins. When the day comes to an end. When I feel grateful. When I need to acknowledge something I have done wrong. When I am worried or afraid. When I face an important decision. When I stand before a new beginning. When I think of my family and the people I love. When someone else needs my prayers. And when I look back on the life I have lived and think about the years still ahead.
In those moments, rather than hesitating because I do not know what to say, I hope I can begin with even a few simple words of prayer.
Ten Moments, Ten Prayers
For now, this space begins with ten prayers for ten moments that return throughout our lives.
I will begin by choosing the prayer that is closest to what I need that day and reading it slowly. At first, I may read the words from the page. When the same kind of moment comes again, I can return and pray it once more. Perhaps after repeating these prayers over time, some of the words will remain in my heart, and one day I may find myself speaking to God in my own words without needing to look at the page.
My goal is not to memorize every prayer exactly. The words may change. They may become shorter. These prayers are not answers telling us what we are supposed to say to God. I think of them simply as small guides that can help us find the first words when prayer feels difficult to begin.
I hope that one day I will no longer need to open this page to remember to give thanks when something good happens, to ask forgiveness when I recognize my shortcomings, or to turn first to God when my heart is troubled.
What Prayer Do You Need Today?
If prayer does not yet feel natural to you, as it often does not to me, perhaps you can choose the prayer closest to your heart today and read it slowly with me.
Click a prayer title below to go directly to that prayer.
01. At the Beginning of a New Day →
A prayer of gratitude for another day, entrusting our thoughts, words, actions, and the day ahead to God.
A prayer to look back on the day with gratitude, acknowledge what was lacking, let go, and ask for peaceful rest.
A prayer of gratitude for the people in our lives, the ordinary things we often overlook, and the blessings both large and small.
04. When I Need to Look at Myself Honestly →
A prayer to reflect on our thoughts, words, and actions, acknowledge what we have done wrong, and ask for forgiveness and the strength to change.
05. When My Heart Is Troubled or Afraid →
A prayer for peace and strength in times of worry, loneliness, fear, and difficulty.
06. When I Face an Important Decision →
A prayer for the wisdom to discern what is right without being ruled by fear, desire, or impatience.
07. When I Stand Before a New Beginning →
A prayer for courage and guidance when beginning something new or entering a new season of life.
08. For My Family and Those I Love →
A prayer for the health, peace, and well-being of our families and loved ones, and for hearts that understand and care for one another.
09. When I Want to Pray for Someone →
A prayer remembering those who are ill, struggling, lonely, or in need, and those throughout the world who are suffering.
10. When I Think About the Life Behind and Ahead of Me →
A prayer of gratitude for the years already lived, honest reflection on what was lacking, and a desire to live the time still given to us with meaning and grace.
In Gratitude and in Difficulty
There have been many days when I turned to God when something was wrong but forgot to pray when everything was going well. I no longer want prayer to be something I remember only when I desperately need something.
I want to be grateful simply for waking to another morning and for reaching the end of an ordinary day in peace. I want to appreciate the people who share my life and not overlook a small kindness simply because it seems ordinary.
At the same time, I want prayer to be a time when I look honestly at myself. Have my words hurt someone? Have I allowed my own desires to make me overlook what truly matters? Have I treated as ordinary the things for which I should have been grateful?
That is why these ten prayers include not only prayers asking God for something, but also prayers of gratitude and repentance, prayers for others, and prayers that invite us to look honestly at our own lives.
I hope I can turn to God when I am joyful and when I am struggling—and even on ordinary days when nothing special seems to be happening.
Pray, and Return to Life
Prayer does not necessarily make the problem in front of us disappear. An important decision may not suddenly become easy, and our worries may not vanish at once. But perhaps, while spending a quiet moment before God, we can see a little more honestly what we are afraid of, what we should be grateful for, where we have fallen short, and what we need to let go.
And when the prayer ends, we return to life.
I hope a morning prayer remains, even a little, in the way I speak and act throughout the day. I hope a prayer of gratitude becomes a kind word offered to another person, and a prayer of repentance becomes a small effort not to repeat the same mistake. If I pray for someone, perhaps I can also reach out and ask how that person is doing. If I pray about a new beginning, perhaps that prayer can help me take one small step despite my fear.
I want to try to live this way myself.
Rather than becoming someone who simply prays a great deal, I hope to become someone who lives, even a little, what I have prayed.
A Little Closer to God
There is no need to read all ten prayers at once.
One prayer for today is enough. In the morning, I can pray for the new day. When something fills me with gratitude, I can give thanks. When something weighs on my conscience, I can pray in repentance. When someone I love is going through a difficult time, I can pray for that person.
Perhaps, as prayer slowly becomes part of everyday life, something more important than memorizing the words will begin to happen:
In the different moments of life, I may begin to think of God first.
That is what I want to begin practicing now.
Not because I want to become good at praying. Not because I want to speak beautiful words. I want to look honestly at myself, who has never been very comfortable with prayer, and slowly learn a life in which I give thanks for what deserves gratitude, confess what needs to be confessed, and entrust to God what is beyond my own strength.
If, as the years pass, I encounter a moment in life that does not quite fit within these ten prayers, perhaps another prayer can be added then. But collecting many prayers is not the purpose.
To become someone who can pray when prayer is needed.
And through prayer, to draw a little closer to God.
If you feel something similar, you are welcome to begin with me in this small space.
Pray, and return to life.
