Opening Question

After visiting museums or memorials related to Korea’s modern history, international visitors often ask, “Nearly eighty years have passed since the end of Japanese colonial rule. Why does this period still occupy such an important place in Korea?” Others wonder, “Does that era continue to influence how Koreans think about themselves and their country today?”

Many nations have experienced colonial rule. In Korea, however, the Japanese colonial period is regarded not simply as a chapter of history but as an important foundation for understanding modern Korean national identity and historical consciousness.

A Short Answer

The Japanese colonial period (1910–1945) remains one of the most significant historical experiences shaping Korea’s national identity, historical awareness, and appreciation of independence and national sovereignty.

Since liberation in 1945, Korea has built a democratic society and developed into one of the world’s leading economies. Even so, memories of colonial rule continue to influence history education, national commemorations, cultural heritage preservation, and perspectives on Korea–Japan relations.

At the same time, more people believe that remembering history should go hand in hand with pursuing cooperation, mutual understanding, and peace in the future.

Understanding the Background

From 1910 until 1945, the Korean Peninsula was under Japanese colonial rule. During this period, political freedoms were severely restricted, Korean language and culture faced suppression, and many Koreans sacrificed their lives while striving for independence.

Following liberation in 1945, Korea re-established itself as an independent nation and went on to achieve remarkable progress in democracy and economic development.

Nevertheless, the history of the independence movement and the colonial experience continues to be remembered through school education, museums, memorials, and national commemorations. For many Koreans, these experiences remain central to understanding the nation’s identity.

A Closer Look

International visitors sometimes ask, “Does this mean Koreans still view Japan negatively?”

Not necessarily.

Today, many Koreans actively engage with Japanese culture, cuisine, travel, academic exchange, and business. Korea and Japan also cooperate closely in areas such as trade, security, science, and regional affairs.

At the same time, many Koreans believe that historical issues should be remembered accurately and approached with sincerity and responsibility.

In other words, growing cooperation in the present and honest reflection on the past are increasingly understood as two separate, yet equally important, matters.

What It Means for Understanding Korean Society

Understanding the legacy of the Japanese colonial period helps explain why history education and the independence movement continue to hold deep significance in Korean society.

The belief that national independence and sovereignty were preserved through great sacrifice remains an important part of Korea’s historical consciousness.

What matters to me is that we remember history not in order to remain trapped in the past, but in order to build a better future.

History should not become a source of endless conflict. Rather, it should serve as a lesson that encourages mutual understanding, reconciliation, and lasting peace.

Dr. Ryu’s Insight

I grew up learning about the Japanese colonial period in Korea, and later I had the opportunity to study in Japan. There I came to realise that people in the two countries often learn and remember the same history from different perspectives.

At first, I found those differences surprising. Gradually, however, I came to understand that education, social environment, and historical experience naturally shape the way people interpret the past.

Many of the Japanese friends I met were kind, sincere, and thoughtful. Our friendships taught me an important lesson—that it is possible to distinguish between historical issues and the individuals we meet in everyday life.

I believe history should never be forgotten. But neither should it become a reason to pass hatred from one generation to the next. The true purpose of remembering the past is to ensure that similar tragedies are never repeated and that future generations can build relationships based on mutual respect and peace.

Read This Page in English ↑

Dr. Ryu’s Insight
