Finding My Direction

Dreams rarely arrive all at once. They gradually reveal themselves through the choices of our parents, unexpected encounters, and the paths we never imagined we would walk. Looking back, I realize that my own direction in life was shaped, step by step, by countless choices and meaningful relationships.
Reflection

Finding My Direction
Looking back on my life, I have come to realize that our dreams rarely appear all at once. More often, they are quietly shaped through the choices of our parents, the people we meet, and unexpected opportunities that only reveal their meaning years later. My own journey was no exception.
After transferring to Daemyeong Elementary School, my father remained in Changnyeong because of his teaching position, while my mother, my two younger sisters, and I settled in Daegu. It was a time when South Korea was experiencing the peak of the second baby boom, and Daegu was growing rapidly. The city was full of energy, and my childhood unfolded alongside that transformation.
I entered Gyeonggu Middle School, where an unexpected event changed the course of our family life. My father underwent spleen surgery after medical examinations revealed a condition that required immediate treatment. Although the operation was successful, my mother decided that the family should return to Changnyeong to care for him during his recovery. My sisters transferred schools, but I remained in Daegu and began commuting every day between Changnyeong and Daegu using the newly opened Guma Expressway.
The daily commute took more than two hours round trip. At the time, I accepted it simply as part of life. Only years later did I realize that those long bus rides quietly taught me discipline, perseverance, and responsibility. Throughout my three years of middle school, I never arrived late, left early, or missed a single day of class.
When I think about those years today, I remember not my grades but the people. Several classmates became lifelong friends, and some remain close to me even now. Looking back, I have learned that meaningful friendships often become one of life’s greatest treasures.
High school brought another season of preparation. Like many students of my generation, I devoted myself almost entirely to university entrance examinations. My goal was to enter the College of Dentistry at Kyungpook National University, but my examination results fell far short of my expectations. For the first time, I found myself standing at a crossroads, uncertain about my future.
At that moment, my parents gently guided me toward Pusan National Fisheries University, now Pukyong National University. When it came to choosing a major, my father recommended Ocean Engineering, a field that was unique in Korea at the time. I did not fully understand his reasoning then, but he believed that a nation surrounded by the sea would need experts in this field, and he quietly hoped that one day I might become a university professor. Looking back, that recommendation became the first turning point of my life.
One of the greatest blessings of my university years was joining Professor Jeong Chang-sik’s laboratory. What seemed like a simple invitation introduced me to senior students who dreamed of studying in Japan. Watching their preparation awakened a dream that would eventually lead me to become a Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholar. At the time, I did not realize it, but the direction of my life had already begun to change.
Like many university freshmen, I also enjoyed the ordinary pleasures of youth—friendships, conversations, billiards, and campus life. I even have a humorous memory of copying a friend’s homework and being publicly embarrassed by Professor Ryu Yeon-seon. Ironically, many years later, the same professor would officiate at my wedding, and we continue to share a warm relationship to this day.
Among all my university friends, Yang Jae-moon has remained my closest companion. Although he now lives in Japan, our friendship has endured across decades and distance. Some friendships are simply too meaningful to fade with time.
Entering the Department of Ocean Engineering initially felt like an unexpected decision. Yet, with the passing of time, I came to understand that it was the first step that carried me beyond the sea—to Japan, to research, to education, and eventually to a life lived across many countries.
Looking back now, I realize that the compass pointing me in that direction had been quietly placed in my hands by my father long before I ever understood where the journey would lead.
Reflection
Every meaningful journey begins with a choice that may not seem significant at the time. What once appeared to be an unexpected academic decision became the foundation for my future as a researcher, educator, and global citizen. Only in hindsight can we truly appreciate how the guidance of those who believe in us shapes the course of our lives.
