“Do you have to graduate from a prestigious university to get a good job?”
Others ask, “Does the university you attend determine your future for the rest of your life?”
Education has long been highly valued in Korean society, and university admissions have attracted enormous public attention.
For this reason, many international visitors are curious about how much graduating from a prestigious university actually influences employment opportunities and social status.
To understand today’s Korea, however, it is important to distinguish between the past and the changes that have taken place in recent years.
A Short Answer
In the past, graduating from a prestigious university often had a significant influence on employment opportunities and social mobility.
Even today, educational background continues to matter in certain companies and professions.
However, an increasing number of employers now place greater emphasis on professional competence, practical experience, creativity, and problem-solving skills.
In industries such as technology, start-ups, and the creative sector, demonstrated ability often matters far more than the name of one’s university.
A prestigious degree can certainly be an advantage, but it is no longer the only path to success.
Understanding the Background
During Korea’s period of rapid economic development, education came to be seen as one of the most effective ways to improve a person’s future.
For many families, gaining admission to a highly respected university represented both academic achievement and greater opportunities in life.
As a result, employers often considered university reputation as one of several factors in recruitment.
Over time, however, the economy and the labour market have changed considerably.
Today’s employers increasingly value practical skills, communication, adaptability, and the ability to solve real-world problems.
More people are also building successful careers through diverse experiences rather than relying solely on academic credentials.
A Closer Look
People sometimes ask, “Does that mean it is difficult to succeed without graduating from a prestigious university?”
Not necessarily. Across Korea, many entrepreneurs, researchers, artists, athletes, engineers, and software developers have achieved outstanding success through their talent, determination, and continuous learning.
In some professions, academic background still carries weight.
Overall, however, Korean society is gradually placing greater value on individual capability and professional expertise than on educational prestige alone.
What It Means for Understanding Korean Society
The attention given to prestigious universities reflects how highly Korean society has traditionally valued education.
At the same time, modern Korea has become far more diverse than can be explained by educational background alone.
Lifelong learning, self-development, and the willingness to acquire new skills have become increasingly important qualities.
From my perspective, what matters most is not where a person studied, but whether they continue learning and developing throughout their lives.
Society continues to change, and the definition of success is changing with it.
I believe that in Korea’s future, continuous growth and professional competence will become even more valuable than academic credentials alone.

Whenever I discuss Korean education with friends from other countries, questions about prestigious universities almost always arise.
Someone once asked me, “Is it difficult to find a good job in Korea if you didn’t graduate from a famous university?”
I usually explain that, in the past, university reputation often carried more weight than it does today.

평생학습과 자기계발, 새로운 기술을 배우는 능력도 점점 더 중요한 가치가 되고 있다.
내가 중요하게 생각하는 것은 어느 대학을 졸업했는가보다, 끊임없이 배우고 자신의 역량을 발전시키려는 자세이다.
사회는 계속 변화하고 있으며, 성공의 기준도 함께 달라지고 있다.
앞으로의 한국 사회에서는 학력보다 지속적인 성장과 전문성이 더욱 중요한 경쟁력이 될 것이라고 생각한다.

외국 친구들과 한국의 교육에 대해 이야기하다 보면 명문대에 관한 질문을 자주 받는다. 어떤 분은 “좋은 대학을 졸업하지 않으면 좋은 직장을 구하기 어려운가요?”라고 물은 적이 있다.
