Remembering history is therefore not about remaining trapped in the past. Rather, it is about learning from previous generations so that similar mistakes are not repeated.
What It Means for Understanding Korean Society
Understanding why history matters to Koreans provides valuable insight into the country’s national identity and social values.
Many Koreans regard freedom, democracy, national sovereignty, and peace not as abstract ideas, but as precious values shaped through difficult historical experiences.
What matters most, in my view, is recognising that remembering the past and moving toward the future are not contradictory goals.
When history is understood honestly and responsibly, it becomes a guide that helps societies build a wiser and more peaceful future.
Dr. Ryu’s Insight
After growing up in Korea, I spent many years studying in Japan, where I had the opportunity to learn from distinguished professors and develop lasting friendships with many Japanese people. Before leaving Korea, I naturally understood historical issues primarily from a Korean perspective. Living in Japan, however, allowed me to see firsthand how historical education and social experiences shape people’s understanding of the past in different ways.
That experience taught me an important lesson. Historical facts must be studied carefully and remembered honestly. At the same time, it is neither fair nor wise to judge the people of today solely through the actions of previous generations. Historical issues between nations and personal friendships between individuals do not always belong to the same dimension.
This does not diminish the importance of history. On the contrary, I believe that the more accurately we understand the past, the better we are able to appreciate one another’s perspectives and engage in meaningful dialogue.
To me, history is not a reason to remain angry with the past, but a responsibility we carry toward the future. Remembering history and striving to understand one another can exist together. When these two values remain in balance, genuine reconciliation, mutual respect, and lasting cooperation become possible.

나는 한국에서 성장한 뒤 일본에서 오랫동안 공부하며 많은 일본인 교수와 친구들을 만날 기회가 있었다. 유학을 떠나기 전에는 역사 문제를 주로 한국인의 시각에서 이해하고 있었다. 그러나 일본에서 생활하면서 서로 다른 역사 교육과 사회적 배경이 사람들의 인식에 얼마나 큰 영향을 미치는지를 직접 경험하게 되었다.
