The K-pop trainee system is a long-term development programme designed to prepare aspiring singers and idols for their professional debut.
Entertainment agencies select potential trainees through auditions and provide training in areas such as singing, dancing, foreign languages, stage performance, media communication, and physical fitness.
Trainees may spend several years developing their abilities while undergoing regular evaluations.

When I think back to the late 1990s and early 2000s, when I was studying in Japan, the Japanese popular music industry was already centred on large entertainment agencies and highly organised artist-management systems.
South Korea also had entertainment companies at the time, but its industry had not yet developed into the global K-pop system that we recognise today.
In the years that followed, Korean agencies refined their trainee programmes and began developing artists with an increasingly international market in mind.
Watching this transformation over time has made me realise just how rapidly Korea’s popular culture industry has grown.
At the same time, I hope we do not overlook the stories of the many trainees who continue working quietly behind the glamour of the stage.
The public naturally sees the artists who successfully make their debut.
Far less visible are the countless young people who invest years of effort without knowing whether they will ever stand on that stage.
To me, the true value of K-pop lies not only in the success we see under the lights, but also in the discipline, sacrifice, and perseverance that made that success possible.
