Beginning of My Story

Every journey begins with its roots.

Reflection

Beginning of My Story

Childhood, Family, and Faith

People rarely remember every detail of their childhood. Yet there are certain memories that remain vivid throughout life, quietly shaping who we become. When I look back on my own journey, I realize that the roots of my life were formed long before I understood their meaning.

I was born on a warm June morning in Sacheon, a small coastal city in the southern part of Korea, the hometown of my mother. My parents were both schoolteachers who met while working there. My father was a gentle and thoughtful man, while my mother possessed remarkable strength and determination. Together they created a loving home where my two younger sisters and I grew up surrounded by affection, discipline, and encouragement.

Faith was an inseparable part of our family life. The first Christian in our family was my grandmother. Long before I was born, she endured the heartbreaking loss of several young sons during infancy. In the midst of her grief, someone invited her to church. What began as a search for comfort eventually transformed not only her own life but also the future of our entire family.

My grandfather’s house stood next to the village church. As the years passed, my father, his siblings, and eventually my grandfather himself embraced the Christian faith. My mother was not raised in a Christian family, but after marrying my father she also became a devoted believer. As a result, my sisters and I grew up attending church from our earliest memories.

Like many children raised in religious families, however, my faith was not always as strong as it appeared. There were seasons when belief came naturally, and other times when questions seemed louder than answers. Looking back, I realize that faith was never simply a religion inherited from my parents; it became a lifelong journey of seeking, questioning, and gradually understanding God’s presence in my life.

My childhood was also marked by constant change. My father’s hometown was Changnyeong, a quiet county surrounded by fields and mountains. It was there that I entered elementary school. Soon afterward, because of my father’s transfer as a teacher, our family moved to Hoengcheon, a remote village where electricity had not yet reached every household. Although we lived there for only about six months, I still remember catching fish in the streams, playing with neighborhood children, and experiencing a way of life that has almost disappeared from modern Korea.

Not long afterward, I moved again—this time to Seoul. It was a dramatic change for a young boy who had grown up in rural communities. Living away from my parents for the first time was difficult, and adapting to a completely different environment was not easy. Before long, my parents decided that I should continue my education in Daegu, a city much closer to our hometown. Without realizing it, my lifelong connection with Daegu had begun.

At the time, these frequent moves often felt confusing and lonely. Each new school meant new classmates, unfamiliar surroundings, and another beginning. Yet those experiences quietly taught me how to adapt, how to observe, and how to build relationships wherever life placed me.

Looking back now, I believe those childhood experiences prepared me for a life far beyond Korea. Years later I would study in Japan, conduct research in the United Kingdom, spend fifteen years living in the Philippines, work in Abu Dhabi, and eventually return home once again. The ability to embrace unfamiliar places did not begin when I became an adult—it began with the small journeys of a young boy learning to start over.

Every journey has a beginning.

Mine began with family, faith, and the courage to take the first step into the unknown.

Reflection

A Thought to Carry Forward

Childhood is not simply a memory of the past. It is the root from which a lifetime grows.

My journey began there.
