How Has the Korean War Continued to Influence Korean Society Today?

Opening Question

More than seventy years have passed since the guns of the Korean War fell silent with the signing of the Armistice Agreement in 1953.

To many people, the Korean War may seem like a historical event that ended long ago. Yet its influence can still be seen throughout Korean society today.

The two Koreas remain militarily divided, and the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) continues to be one of the most heavily fortified borders in the world. Many families separated during the war have never been reunited, while national defense and security remain major concerns in everyday Korean life.

Foreign visitors often ask,

“The Korean War ended a long time ago. Why is it still considered such an important issue in Korea?”

I believe the answer begins with understanding that the Korean War is not merely part of Korea’s past. It remains one of the foundations for understanding Korea as it is today.

A Short Answer

I believe the Korean War is not simply a war that ended decades ago. It is a war whose consequences continue to shape Korean society.

After the war, South Korea rebuilt itself from devastation, developed into a democratic nation, and became one of the world’s leading economies.

The division of the Korean Peninsula, however, has never disappeared.

North and South Korea have followed completely different political, economic, and social paths, while security issues continue to influence Korea’s national policies, diplomacy, and defense.

The Korean War was far more than a military conflict.

I believe it continues to shape Korea’s national identity, security awareness, alliance with the United States, inter-Korean relations, and even public discussions about reunification.

Understanding the Background

The Korean War began on June 25, 1950, when North Korea invaded South Korea.

The war lasted for about three years and claimed the lives of millions of soldiers and civilians. Cities and industrial facilities were devastated, and countless families lost their homes and livelihoods.

Although the fighting stopped with the signing of the Armistice Agreement in 1953, no formal peace treaty has ever been concluded.

Technically, the Korean War has never officially ended.

Following the war, South Korea developed a democratic political system and a market economy, while North Korea continued under a socialist system.

These different paths eventually produced enormous differences in economic development, political institutions, and international relationships.

I believe it is difficult to fully understand Korea today without first understanding the Korean War.

A Closer Look

The influence of the Korean War extends far beyond politics and diplomacy.

Military service, national security, the alliance between Korea and the United States, and news related to North Korea remain familiar parts of everyday life for many Koreans.

The war also separated millions of families, and many people passed away without ever seeing their loved ones again.

Although the generation that directly experienced the war is gradually disappearing, its memories continue through family stories, education, memorial sites, museums, and national commemorations.

Younger generations, having never experienced the war themselves, often view North Korea and the question of reunification differently from older generations.

I believe such differences are natural as society changes over time.

Even so, the Korean War remains one of the most significant historical events shaping contemporary Korean society.

Why It Matters Today

South Korea has become a prosperous democracy with one of the world’s largest economies, yet its security environment remains unique.

North Korea’s nuclear program, military tensions on the Korean Peninsula, international sanctions, and regional diplomacy are all deeply connected to the legacy of the Korean War.

Within Korea, issues such as national defense, peace, military spending, the Korea–U.S. alliance, and reunification continue to generate active public discussion.

I believe these debates continue because the Korean War is not merely history—it remains a living reality that continues to influence the present.

Remembering the war is not about preserving hostility toward the past.

It is about understanding the value of peace and ensuring that such a tragedy is never repeated.

Dr. Ryu’s Insight

When talking with friends from other countries about Korea, I sometimes explain that South and North Korea are still technically under an armistice rather than a peace treaty.

Many of them look surprised and ask,

“Does that mean the war hasn’t actually ended?”

For many people outside Korea, the Korean War is remembered as a historical event that ended long ago. They are often surprised to learn that only an armistice agreement was signed, and that legally the war has never been formally concluded.

Whenever those conversations arise, I try to explain that the Korean War is not simply a chapter in Korea’s history. It is one of the most important keys to understanding Korean society today.

South Korea rose from the devastation of war to become a thriving democracy and one of the world’s leading economies.

Yet behind that remarkable achievement remain the memories of war, the continuing importance of national security, and the hope that lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula can one day become a reality.

I believe we should remember the Korean War not to preserve hatred or resentment, but to protect the value of peace for future generations.

History becomes truly meaningful when we learn from its tragedies and use those lessons to build a better future.

Read This Page in English ↑

Dr. Ryu’s Insight
