How Will Population Ageing Change Korean Families and the Economy?

Opening Question

Today, Korea is frequently mentioned as one of the countries experiencing the fastest population ageing in the world.

As life expectancy continues to increase while birth rates remain low, the proportion of older people in the population continues to grow.

After reading about these demographic trends, many foreigners ask,

“How is population ageing changing Korean society?”

It is easy to think of ageing simply as an increase in the number of elderly people.

I believe, however, that population ageing is a much broader transformation—one that is reshaping Korean families, the economy, and the way people live.

A Short Answer

I believe the most significant consequence of population ageing is that it is changing both the role of the family and the structure of the economy.

As people live longer, parents and children now spend far more years together than in previous generations.

At the same time, declining birth rates mean that younger generations are becoming smaller, while the working-age population continues to shrink.

These demographic changes affect healthcare, welfare, pensions, the labour market, consumer behaviour, housing, and local communities.

Population ageing is therefore not an issue affecting only older people. It is a social transformation that every generation must prepare for together.

Understanding the Background

Only a few decades ago, Korea was considered a relatively young society.

However, improvements in living standards and medical care have significantly extended life expectancy, while declining marriage and birth rates have rapidly transformed the country’s population structure.

In the past, large extended families living together were common.

Today, nuclear families and single-person households have become much more widespread.

At the same time, the number of elderly people living alone continues to increase, making elderly care and social welfare increasingly important.

From an economic perspective, the shrinking working-age population presents new challenges for businesses, public finances, and long-term economic growth.

For these reasons, population ageing is widely understood not simply as a demographic issue, but as a structural transformation affecting every aspect of society.

A Closer Look

International visitors sometimes ask,

“Is population ageing necessarily a negative development?”

I do not believe the answer is simply yes.

Longer life expectancy is also evidence of improvements in healthcare, living conditions, and overall quality of life.

Today, many older adults remain healthy, continue working, begin new careers, or actively participate in their communities long after retirement.

At the same time, declining labour force participation, increasing welfare costs, and the responsibility of supporting an ageing population present important challenges for the future.

I believe the real question is not whether population ageing itself is good or bad, but how society prepares for and responds to these changes.

What It Means for Understanding Korean Society

Population ageing will become one of the most important themes for understanding Korea in the decades ahead.

Family structures, workplace culture, healthcare, welfare systems, cities, and local communities will all continue to evolve in response to demographic change.

At the same time, new industries and technologies are emerging to meet these changing needs.

Artificial intelligence, digital healthcare, elderly care services, and the health industry are all expected to play increasingly important roles in Korean society.

I believe population ageing should not be viewed simply as a problem to overcome.

Rather, it is a process through which society prepares for a new demographic reality.

Every society experiences demographic change.

The real challenge is creating a sustainable society in which people of all generations can live, work, and thrive together.

Dr. Ryu’s Insight

During my years living abroad, I had opportunities to visit many different countries.

In recent years, however, I have noticed that conversations about population ageing have become increasingly common almost everywhere.

Many people once thought of Korea as a young and energetic country.

Today, they are often surprised to learn how rapidly Korea’s population structure is changing.

Whenever this topic came up, I explained that population ageing is not a challenge unique to Korea.

It is a common issue that many countries around the world are now facing.

At the same time, I believe Korea’s experience is especially meaningful because these demographic changes are occurring at an exceptionally rapid pace.

For that reason, Korea’s response may provide valuable lessons for other societies facing similar challenges.

Personally, I do not see population ageing simply as a burden.

If older generations, with their accumulated experience, knowledge, and wisdom, can continue to participate actively in society, they can become one of its greatest assets.

I believe the future of Korean society will depend not on competition between generations, but on greater cooperation and mutual understanding across generations.

Read This Page in English ↑

Dr. Ryu’s Insight
