Why Are More Koreans Postponing or Giving Up Marriage and Childbirth?
Opening Question
One of the social issues most frequently discussed in Korea today is the country’s extremely low birth rate.
After reading international news reports, many foreigners ask,
“Why are more young Koreans postponing or even giving up marriage and having children?”
In the past, marriage and parenthood were often regarded as natural stages of life.
Today, however, as people’s values and lifestyles have become more diverse, attitudes toward marriage and raising children have changed significantly.
A Short Answer
There is no single explanation for why more Koreans are delaying or choosing not to marry and have children.
High housing costs, the financial burden of raising children, job insecurity, concerns about work-life balance, and changing personal values all influence these decisions.
In earlier generations, marriage and parenthood were often viewed as expected life choices.
Today, many people place greater importance on deciding for themselves how they wish to live.
This trend is not unique to Korea. Similar changes can be observed in many other developed countries.
Understanding the Background
Over the past several decades, Korea has experienced rapid industrialisation and urbanisation.
While living standards have improved dramatically, the costs of housing and education have also risen.
Many young adults prefer to establish financial stability before considering marriage.
At the same time, greater opportunities for women in education and the workplace, together with a growing emphasis on personal fulfilment, have reshaped people’s expectations about family life.
These changes have contributed to later marriages, lower birth rates, and, for some people, the decision not to marry or have children at all.
A Closer Look
International visitors sometimes ask, “Do young Koreans simply no longer want to get married?”
The answer is not that simple.
Many young people still hope to build happy families one day.
However, they often feel that current economic and social conditions make such decisions difficult.
Society is also becoming more accepting of different lifestyles, including choosing not to marry or not to have children.
Rather than asking which choice is right or wrong, it may be more meaningful to create a society in which people are free to make responsible decisions about their own lives.
What It Means for Understanding Korean Society
Changing attitudes toward marriage and childbirth have become one of the key themes for understanding contemporary Korea.
These changes influence not only population trends but also housing, education, employment, and social welfare.
At the same time, the meaning of family itself is gradually evolving.
Family structures are becoming more diverse, while greater respect is being shown for individual happiness and quality of life.
What I consider most important is not simply increasing the number of marriages or births.
The greater challenge is creating a society in which people can look to the future with confidence and hope.
When people feel secure about tomorrow, decisions about marriage and parenthood are likely to become more natural.
Dr. Ryu’s Insight
Whenever I had opportunities to talk with foreign friends visiting Korea, this topic often came up.
Some would ask, “Korea is a highly developed country. Why, then, are fewer people getting married and having children?”
Whenever that question arose, I explained that there is no single answer.
Economic pressures certainly play an important role, but changing personal values, different ways of working, and people’s expectations—and uncertainties—about the future all influence these decisions together.
One lesson I have learned from experiencing different societies is that ideas about marriage and family continue to evolve with each generation.
At the same time, one thing remains remarkably consistent.
People are more willing to build families when they feel hopeful and secure about the future.
My hope is that Korean society will continue to become a place where every individual is respected, whatever choices they make, and where younger generations can plan their futures with greater confidence and optimism.

Dr. Ryu’s Insight
