Why Was Hangul Created, and What Makes It Distinctive?
Opening Question
People who begin learning Korean often make an unexpected observation.
“Hangul is much easier to learn than I expected.”
Many learners are able to read Korean letters after only a few days of study.
This naturally leads to another question.
“Why was such an easy writing system created in the first place?”
Today, Hangul is the writing system used by all Koreans in their daily lives.
Behind its elegant simplicity, however, lies a remarkable philosophy: the belief that everyone should have the opportunity to read, write, and express their thoughts.
For that reason, Hangul is regarded not merely as an alphabet but as one of the most important keys to understanding Korea’s history, culture, and educational ideals.
A Short Answer
Hangul was created in 1443 under the leadership of King Sejong and officially proclaimed in 1446 as Hunminjeongeum, meaning “The Proper Sounds for the Instruction of the People.”
At that time, Classical Chinese characters were the primary writing system used in Korea.
Because they required years of study, many ordinary people found it difficult to read or express themselves in writing.
King Sejong sought to solve this problem by introducing a new writing system that could be learned more easily by everyone.
Today, Hangul continues to attract international attention for its systematic design and its accessibility to learners.
Understanding the Background
Hangul was designed according to the principles of human speech.
The shapes of the consonants are traditionally understood to reflect the position of the speech organs when the sounds are produced.
The vowels were created using philosophical concepts representing heaven, earth, and humanity.
These design principles give Hangul a logical structure in which the relationship between sounds and written symbols follows clear patterns.
Another distinctive feature is that individual letters are grouped into syllable blocks rather than written in a continuous line.
Although this arrangement may appear unfamiliar at first, many learners find that it becomes intuitive once they understand the underlying system.
Of course, learning to read Hangul and becoming fluent in Korean are two very different achievements.
Mastering the writing system is only the beginning; meaningful communication also requires vocabulary, grammar, and an understanding of Korean culture.
A Closer Look
People sometimes ask, “Is Hangul the most scientific writing system in the world?”
There is no single answer to that question.
The world is home to many remarkable writing systems, each shaped by its own history and culture.
What makes Hangul particularly distinctive is that both its design principles and the process of its creation have been carefully documented.
Its logical relationship between sounds and written symbols has earned widespread recognition among linguists and language educators.
For this reason, Hangul is often introduced internationally as one of the world’s most original and systematically designed writing systems.
What It Means for Understanding Korean Society
Hangul has played a profound role in Korea’s educational and cultural development.
Beyond serving as a writing system, it has helped make literacy widely accessible and has supported the growth of publishing, education, and digital communication.
Today, Hangul is also regarded as one of Korea’s most important cultural symbols.
From my perspective, its greatest significance lies not simply in the fact that it is easy to learn.
What continues to inspire me is the vision behind its creation—the desire to give ordinary people the ability to learn, communicate, and express themselves through writing.
A writing system is more than a collection of letters.
It is a bridge that connects people to knowledge, culture, and one another.
Dr. Ryu’s Insight
Whenever I have had the opportunity to introduce Korean to people from other countries, our conversation has almost always included Hangul.
Many learners have told me how surprised they were to find themselves reading Korean shop signs after only a few days.
When that happens, I usually smile and say,
“Congratulations—you’ve learned to read Hangul. Now the real journey of learning Korean begins.”
Being able to read Hangul and being able to communicate naturally in Korean are two very different stages of learning.
Yet once people can read the letters, they begin to experience Korea in a completely different way.
Street signs, restaurant menus, place names, and even everyday conversations gradually become more meaningful.
The same has been true whenever I have learned foreign languages myself.
Learning a new writing system is never just about memorising letters.
It is often the first step toward understanding the people, culture, and way of thinking behind the language.

Dr. Ryu’s Insight
