Is the Group Still Considered More Important Than the Individual in Korea Today?

Opening Question
People who have lived or worked in Korea often make an interesting observation.
“Koreans seem to place great importance on teamwork.”
After experiencing company dinners, group projects, or various social gatherings, some visitors ask,
“Is the group considered more important than the individual in Korea?”
The answer is not simply yes or no.
Korean society has long valued cooperation and community, yet it has also been changing steadily toward greater respect for individual choice, diversity, and personal freedom.
Understanding this balance is one of the keys to understanding modern Korea.
A Short Answer
Traditionally, Korean society has placed great importance on cooperation, harmony, and the well-being of the community.
Families, schools, workplaces, and neighbourhoods have long encouraged people to work together rather than act solely as individuals.
These values contributed to overcoming difficult periods in Korea’s history and played an important role during the country’s rapid economic development.
Today, however, personal goals, individual happiness, and diverse ways of living are becoming increasingly important.
Modern Korea is therefore moving toward a society that seeks a healthier balance between community and individuality.
Understanding the Background
For centuries, Korean society developed under the influence of agriculture and Confucian philosophy.
Successful farming depended heavily on cooperation and mutual trust within local communities.
Confucian values also emphasised social harmony, family responsibility, and consideration for others.
These traditions continued to influence organisational culture even after industrialisation, shaping schools, companies, and many other institutions.
In recent decades, however, globalisation, technological change, and shifting social values have encouraged greater appreciation for individual freedom, creativity, and personal choice.
As a result, contemporary Korea reflects both traditional community values and modern individual aspirations.
A Closer Look
Some people ask, “Does the group’s opinion always come before an individual’s opinion in Korea?”
Not necessarily.
Many companies and educational institutions now recognise that creativity, diversity, and independent thinking are essential for innovation.
Younger generations, in particular, are more likely to make personal decisions based on their own values and life goals.
Even so, cooperation, mutual consideration, and working toward shared objectives remain highly respected.
Rather than choosing between the individual and the group, Korean society is increasingly seeking ways for both to complement one another.
What It Means for Understanding Korean Society
Understanding this cultural balance helps explain many aspects of Korean life.
It sheds light on why teamwork is highly valued, why cooperation is often encouraged, and why people frequently place importance on maintaining harmonious relationships.
At the same time, it also explains why younger generations increasingly seek greater independence and personal fulfilment.
From my perspective, the relationship between the individual and the community should not be viewed as a competition.
A healthy community should help individuals grow, while individuals should be able to contribute their talents and creativity to the community.
I believe Korea’s future will become even stronger as it continues to build a society that values both cooperation and individuality.
Dr. Ryu’s Insight
While working and interacting with people from different countries, I often found myself discussing the way Koreans work together.
One foreign colleague once remarked,
“Koreans seem very considerate of one another when working as a team.”
Another, however, felt that organisations sometimes appeared to place greater importance on group decisions than on individual opinions.
Whenever these conversations arose, I explained that Korea has a long tradition of valuing the community, but that today’s society is also placing increasing importance on individual creativity and personal choice.
Living in different countries has taught me that no society thrives by focusing exclusively on either the individual or the group.
Lasting progress comes from finding the right balance between the two.
That, I believe, is the direction in which Korean society continues to evolve.

한국에서 생활하거나 직장을 경험한 외국인들은 종종 이런 이야기를 한다. “한국 사람들은 팀워크를 정말 중요하게 생각하는 것 같습니다.”
또 어떤 사람들은 회식이나 공동 활동, 조직 문화를 경험한 뒤 이렇게 묻기도 한다. “한국에서는 개인보다 집단이 더 중요한가요?”
이 질문에는 단순히 “그렇다” 또는 “그렇지 않다”라고 답하기는 어렵다.
한국 사회는 오랫동안 공동체를 중요하게 여기는 문화를 발전시켜 왔지만, 동시에 개인의 다양성과 자율성을 존중하는 방향으로도 꾸준히 변화하고 있기 때문이다.
핵심부터 말하자면
한국 사회는 전통적으로 공동체의 조화와 협력을 중요하게 여겨 왔지만, 오늘날에는 개인의 개성과 선택도 점점 더 존중하는 사회로 변화하고 있다.
과거에는 가족과 학교, 직장, 지역사회 등 다양한 공동체 속에서 서로 협력하고 조화를 이루는 것이 중요한 가치였다.
이러한 문화는 어려운 시기를 함께 극복하고 빠른 경제 성장을 이루는 과정에서도 긍정적인 역할을 하였다. 그러나 오늘날에는 개인의 행복과 자율성, 다양한 삶의 방식도 중요한 가치로 인식되면서 공동체와 개인의 균형을 찾으려는 변화가 이어지고 있다.
질문의 배경 이해하기
한국 사회는 오랫동안 농경사회와 유교 문화의 영향을 받으며 발전해 왔다.
농사를 함께 짓고 마을 공동체를 유지하기 위해서는 협력과 상호 신뢰가 매우 중요하였다. 또한 가족과 공동체의 화합을 중시하는 유교적 가치관도 사회 전반에 큰 영향을 미쳤다.
이러한 전통은 산업화 이후에도 기업과 학교, 군대 등 다양한 조직문화 속에서 이어져 왔다. 한편 세계화와 정보기술의 발전, 그리고 젊은 세대의 가치관 변화는 개인의 자유와 다양성을 더욱 중요하게 만드는 계기가 되었다.
오늘날 한국 사회는 공동체의 협력과 개인의 자율성이 함께 공존하는 방향으로 변화하고 있다.
조금 더 깊이 들여다보면
외국인들은 때때로 “그렇다면 한국에서는 개인의 의견보다 집단의 의견이 항상 우선합니까?”라고 묻기도 한다.
반드시 그렇지는 않다.
오늘날 많은 기업과 학교에서는 창의성과 다양성을 중요한 경쟁력으로 생각하고 있으며, 자유롭게 의견을 제시하는 문화도 점차 확대되고 있다.
특히 젊은 세대는 자신의 삶과 가치관을 스스로 선택하려는 경향이 이전보다 훨씬 강해졌다.
그럼에도 공동의 목표를 위해 협력하고 서로 배려하는 태도는 여전히 한국 사회에서 중요한 가치로 남아 있다.
즉, 한국 사회는 집단보다 개인, 또는 개인보다 집단이라는 하나의 기준으로 설명하기보다, 두 가치를 어떻게 조화롭게 균형 있게 발전시킬 것인가를 고민하는 사회라고 이해하는 것이 더 적절하다.
한국 사회를 이해하는 데 어떤 의미가 있는가
이러한 특징을 이해하면 한국인의 조직문화와 인간관계, 그리고 의사결정 방식을 더욱 쉽게 이해할 수 있다.
왜 팀워크를 중요하게 생각하는지, 왜 함께 협력하는 문화를 긍정적으로 평가하는지, 그리고 동시에 개인의 다양성을 존중하려는 움직임이 커지고 있는지도 자연스럽게 연결된다.
내가 중요하게 생각하는 것은 공동체와 개인은 서로 경쟁하는 개념이 아니라는 점이다.
공동체는 개인의 성장을 도울 수 있어야 하며, 개인 역시 자신의 능력과 개성을 통해 공동체에 기여할 수 있어야 한다.
앞으로의 한국 사회도 이러한 균형을 더욱 발전시켜 나갈 때 더욱 건강하고 창의적인 사회가 될 수 있다고 생각한다.
Dr. Ryu’s Insight
외국 친구들과 함께 일하거나 프로젝트를 진행할 때면 한국 사람들의 팀워크에 대해 이야기하는 경우가 종종 있었다.
어떤 친구는 “한국 사람들은 함께 일할 때 서로를 많이 배려하는 것 같습니다.”라고 말한 적이 있다. 반면 또 다른 친구는 개인의 의견보다 조직의 의견을 더 중요하게 생각하는 것처럼 느껴졌다고 이야기하기도 했다.
나는 그럴 때마다 한국 사회는 공동체를 중요하게 여기는 전통을 가지고 있지만, 오늘날에는 개인의 다양성과 창의성도 점점 더 존중하는 방향으로 변화하고 있다고 설명하곤 했다.
여러 나라에서 생활하며 느낀 것은 어느 사회든 공동체만 강조하거나 개인만 강조해서는 지속적으로 발전하기 어렵다는 사실이었다.
결국 중요한 것은 어느 한쪽을 선택하는 것이 아니라, 서로를 존중하며 함께 성장할 수 있는 균형을 만들어 가는 것이라고 생각한다.
