The Korea–U.S. relationship is an important partnership that began with security cooperation following the Korean War and gradually expanded into economic, educational, technological, and cultural fields.
Because of the security environment on the Korean Peninsula, cooperation with the United States has long been a central part of Korea’s defence and foreign policy.
The two countries have also developed close ties through trade, investment, research, education, and exchanges between their people.
Although the priorities and forms of cooperation continue to evolve, the relationship remains an essential element in understanding Korea’s international position.
Understanding the Background
The Korean War, which began in 1950, had a profound effect not only on the Korean Peninsula but also on the wider international community.
Following the war, Korea and the United States developed an alliance centred on security cooperation.
As Korea’s economy grew, the United States also became an important trading partner and a major source of investment, technology, and access to global markets.
Many Korean students pursued higher education and research in the United States, while exchanges among universities, companies, and research institutions continued to expand.
More recently, bilateral cooperation has extended into fields such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, advanced technologies, energy, and responses to climate change.
The relationship has therefore developed far beyond its original military foundations.

International relations are rarely that simple.

Understanding the Korea–U.S. relationship helps explain why Korean society places such importance on security, international cooperation, and participation in the global economy.
It also reveals the diplomatic challenges Korea faces because of its geopolitical position and its need to maintain productive relationships with many different countries.
From my perspective, what matters most is not the relationship with any one country alone, but the ability to build trust and cooperate in pursuit of peace and shared prosperity.
Relationships among nations cannot be sustained through competition alone.
A more stable and sustainable future becomes possible when countries seek to understand one another and work together on common challenges.

While living overseas, I had many opportunities to talk about Korea with people from a wide range of national backgrounds.
Questions about the relationship between Korea and the United States often arose during those conversations.
I would explain that the relationship cannot be understood solely as a military alliance.
Today, the two countries cooperate in many areas, including security, trade, education, science and technology, and culture.
Of course, the international environment is constantly changing, and relationships between countries must also evolve with the times.
For that reason, I believe it is more important to focus on mutual trust and the willingness to address shared challenges than on emotional attitudes toward any particular country.
Living abroad taught me that trust between nations, like trust between individuals, cannot be created overnight.
It develops gradually through dialogue, cooperation, and the fulfilment of mutual responsibilities.
I hope Korea will continue strengthening its partnership with the United States while also building constructive relationships with many other countries and contributing to peace and shared prosperity.

한미 관계를 이해하면 한국 사회가 안보뿐 아니라 국제협력과 세계경제를 얼마나 중요하게 생각하는지도 함께 이해할 수 있다. 또한 한국은 지정학적 환경 속에서 다양한 국가들과 협력하며 균형 있는 외교를 모색해야 하는 현실도 함께 살펴볼 수 있다.
내가 중요하게 생각하는 것은 한 국가와의 관계 자체보다, 변화하는 국제사회 속에서 평화와 번영을 위해 신뢰를 쌓고 협력하는 자세이다.
오늘날 국가 간의 관계는 경쟁만으로 유지될 수 없다.
서로를 이해하고 협력하는 노력이 있을 때 더욱 안정적이고 지속 가능한 미래를 만들어 갈 수 있다고 생각한다.

해외에서 생활하면서 다양한 국적의 사람들과 한국에 대해 이야기할 기회가 많았다. 그 과정에서 한국과 미국의 관계에 대해 질문을 받는 경우도 적지 않았다.
나는 그럴 때마다 한미 관계는 단순히 군사동맹만으로 설명하기 어려운 관계라고 이야기하곤 했다.

여러 나라에서 생활하며 느낀 것은 국제사회에서도 사람과 사람의 관계처럼 신뢰는 하루아침에 만들어지지 않는다는 사실이었다.
앞으로도 한국은 다양한 국가들과 우호적인 관계를 발전시키면서 평화와 공동 번영에 기여하는 나라가 되기를 바란다.
