Every society experiences differences between generations.
However, Korea underwent rapid economic growth, democratisation, and digital transformation within a relatively short period.
As a result, people from different generations often grew up under very different social and economic circumstances, leading to noticeable differences in values and lifestyles.

Older and younger generations in Korea often have different perspectives on work, family, relationships, and life because they were shaped by very different historical experiences.
Older generations generally place greater importance on economic stability, responsibility, and the well-being of the family or community.

These differences should not simply be viewed as conflict.
Rather, they reflect the natural changes that accompany social development and generational change.

Many members of Korea’s older generations experienced the years of post-war hardship, industrialisation, and rapid economic development.
Working diligently, making sacrifices for one’s family, and placing the community before the individual were widely respected values.
Younger Koreans, by contrast, grew up in a more prosperous society shaped by digital technology and global communication.
They generally have greater access to international cultures and information than previous generations and are more accustomed to expressing their individuality and pursuing diverse lifestyles.
Naturally, these different life experiences have influenced how each generation views work, relationships, success, and happiness.
A Closer Look
People sometimes ask, “Does this mean there is serious conflict between generations in Korea?”
Differences certainly exist.
However, efforts to understand one another can also be found within families, workplaces, schools, and communities.
Older generations often learn from the creativity and fresh perspectives of younger people, while younger generations increasingly recognise the experience and sacrifices of those who came before them.
Rather than seeing these differences as signs of division, it is more helpful to understand them as the natural result of people growing up in different times.

Understanding generational differences helps explain many of the changes taking place in contemporary Korean society.
Attitudes toward work, marriage, education, consumption, politics, and digital culture have all been influenced by the different historical experiences of each generation.
From my perspective, the important question is not which generation is right.
Every generation has done its best within the circumstances of its own time.
Each has developed different experiences, priorities, and ways of looking at life.
When people respect one another’s experiences and remain willing to learn from each other, generational differences become not a source of conflict but a source of wisdom and progress.

I belong to a generation that has witnessed Korea’s remarkable transformation firsthand.

한국의 기성세대와 젊은 세대는 서로 다른 시대적 경험 속에서 성장했기 때문에 삶의 가치관과 일, 가족, 인간관계에 대한 생각에서 차이를 보이는 경우가 많다.

기성세대는 젊은 세대의 새로운 생각을 배우기도 하고, 젊은 세대 역시 이전 세대가 이루어 온 노력과 경험을 존중하려는 모습을 보인다.

내가 중요하게 생각하는 것은 어느 세대가 더 옳으냐를 판단하는 일이 아니다.
각 세대는 자신이 살아온 시대 속에서 최선을 다해 살아왔으며, 서로 다른 경험을 가지고 있을 뿐이다.

세대를 이어 주는 것은 나이가 아니라 이해와 존중이라고 생각하기 때문이다.
