Why Is Family So Important in Korea?

Opening Question

International visitors to Korea are often fascinated by the way families gather during major holidays such as Seollal (Lunar New Year) and Chuseok (Harvest Festival). They also notice how much time, care, and dedication parents and children devote to one another.

As a result, they frequently ask, “Why is family considered so important in Korea?” or “Are family ties stronger in Korea than in many other countries?”

Every society values family in its own way. In Korea, however, family has traditionally been regarded not merely as a biological relationship but as the most important community in which people learn love, responsibility, and mutual support.

A Short Answer

For generations, Korean society has viewed the family as the most fundamental community where love, responsibility, care, and sacrifice are shared.

Parents have traditionally devoted themselves to their children’s education and future, while children have been expected to respect and care for their parents as they grow older.

Although family structures and lifestyles are changing rapidly today, the belief that family members should support one another through life’s challenges remains one of the enduring values of Korean society.

Understanding the Background

For centuries, Korea’s Confucian tradition placed great importance on the family as the foundation of both society and personal morality.

Relationships extended beyond parents and children to include grandparents, relatives, and ancestors. Traditional occasions such as Seollal, Chuseok, and ancestral memorial ceremonies provided opportunities for families to gather and strengthen these bonds.

Families also played an essential role during difficult times by providing emotional encouragement and financial support to one another.

Although industrialisation, urbanisation, and changing lifestyles have transformed Korean families, many Koreans still regard their family as the people they can rely on most in times of need.

A Closer Look

International visitors sometimes ask, “Do all Koreans still hold these traditional views of family?”

Not necessarily.

Single-person households have increased rapidly, while attitudes toward marriage, childbirth, and family life have become much more diverse. Korean families today take many different forms.

Even so, it remains common for family members to come together during important moments in life and to support one another through both celebrations and hardships.

In other words, while the structure of Korean families is changing, the importance attached to family relationships continues to be one of the defining characteristics of Korean society.

What It Means for Understanding Korean Society

Understanding the importance of family provides valuable insight into Korean society and the way many Koreans view human relationships.

For many people, personal success is important, but so too are the happiness, stability, and well-being of their family.

What matters to me is not the particular form a family takes, but what family members mean to one another.

No matter how quickly society changes, knowing that there are people who trust, support, and stand beside us during difficult times gives us strength. I believe the family is the first place where we learn the meaning of trust, responsibility, and unconditional love.

Dr. Ryu’s Insight

I grew up in Korea, studied in Japan and the United Kingdom, and later spent many years living in the Philippines etc. Although every country had its own customs and traditions, I found one thing to be universal: people everywhere love their families.

At the same time, I felt that Korean families possess a distinctive characteristic. Parents often devote themselves wholeheartedly to their children’s future, while children generally feel a strong sense of responsibility toward their parents. At times, this family-centred culture can place considerable pressure on individuals. Yet when life becomes difficult, family is often the source of the greatest comfort and strength.

Whenever I lived overseas, what I missed most during traditional holidays was not the festive food or special events, but the simple experience of sitting around the family table together. The farther I was from home, the more deeply I came to appreciate the meaning of family.

Korean families today are no longer all the same. Family structures have become more diverse, and ways of living together continue to evolve. I believe these changes are both natural and inevitable.

What truly matters is not preserving one traditional model of family, but maintaining relationships built on mutual respect, trust, and a willingness to stand by one another when life becomes difficult. In that sense, I believe family will continue to remain one of the most important keys to understanding Korean society.

Read This Page in English ↑

Dr. Ryu’s Insight
