Many international visitors describe Korea as a highly competitive society. They see students studying hard for university entrance examinations, employees striving for better jobs and promotions, and companies constantly innovating to remain competitive in global markets.
As a result, many ask, “Why is Korean society so competitive?” or “Do Koreans simply enjoy competition?”
To understand Korean society, it is important to look beyond competition itself and explore the historical, economic, and social forces that have shaped this culture.
A Short Answer
Korean society is highly competitive because rapid economic development created a strong belief that education, hard work, and personal achievement were the keys to building a better life.
Competition has also been intensified by limited opportunities in certain areas, strong educational aspirations, the concentration of resources in the Seoul metropolitan area, and the high value placed on stable and prestigious careers.
At the same time, Korean society today is increasingly recognising that quality of life, personal well-being, and work-life balance are just as important as success through competition.
Understanding the Background
After the Korean War, Korea began rebuilding from severe poverty and achieved remarkable industrialisation and democratisation within a relatively short period.
During this process, education became widely regarded as the most effective path to upward social mobility. Many families believed that academic achievement and professional success could improve not only an individual’s future but also the well-being of the entire family.
Competition therefore became deeply embedded in many areas of society, including education, employment, business, and career advancement. Korean companies also learned that continuous innovation and global competitiveness were essential for survival in international markets, reinforcing a culture that values performance and achievement.
A Closer Look
International visitors sometimes ask, “Does this mean Koreans enjoy living in constant competition?”
Not necessarily.
Many Koreans would say that they compete not because they particularly enjoy it, but because competition has become part of the reality in which they live. At the same time, there is growing public awareness that excessive competition can contribute to stress, anxiety, and increasing pressures on younger generations.
As a result, greater attention is now being given to creativity, collaboration, diversity, and personal well-being, gradually changing the way success is understood.
What It Means for Understanding Korean Society
Understanding competition helps explain both Korea’s remarkable achievements and many of the social challenges it faces today.
A highly competitive environment has contributed to rapid economic growth, technological innovation, and high educational standards. At the same time, it has also been linked to issues such as low birth rates, work-related stress, and concerns about quality of life.
What matters most, in my view, is not whether competition is inherently good or bad, but whether it encourages personal growth while also allowing people to live healthy, meaningful, and fulfilling lives.
As Korea continues to evolve, one of its greatest challenges will be finding a better balance between competition and cooperation.
Dr. Ryu’s Insight
When I was growing up, Korea was a far poorer country than it is today. Many people believed that education, diligence, and perseverance could change not only their own lives but also the future of their families. I grew up during that period and experienced firsthand how determination and hard work could open new opportunities.
Later, I studied in Japan, conducted research in the United Kingdom, and taught students in both Korea and the Philippines. These experiences allowed me to compare different educational systems and social cultures. Although each country expressed competition in different ways, I came to realise that sustained national development always requires commitment, discipline, and continuous effort.
Over time, however, I also learned that competition alone cannot create a healthy society. Competition can inspire excellence, but long-term progress depends equally on cooperation, mutual respect, and concern for the well-being of others.
Korea has achieved remarkable success through hard work and determination. Looking ahead, I hope the country will continue to build a society where excellence is encouraged, but where happiness, balance, and strong communities are valued just as highly. To me, that represents the next stage of Korea’s development.

그래서 외국인들은 이렇게 묻는다. “왜 한국 사회는 이렇게 경쟁이 치열한가요?”, “한국 사람들은 경쟁을 좋아하는 것입니까?”
한국 사회를 이해하기 위해서는 경쟁 자체보다, 경쟁이 형성된 역사적 배경과 사회적 의미를 함께 살펴볼 필요가 있다.

최근에는 창의성과 협력, 다양성, 그리고 개인의 행복을 더욱 중요하게 생각하는 문화가 확산되면서 경쟁의 방식도 조금씩 변화하고 있다.
한국 사회를 이해하는 데 어떤 의미가 있는가
한국 사회의 경쟁을 이해하는 것은 한국의 빠른 발전과 현재의 사회적 과제를 함께 이해하는 중요한 열쇠가 된다.
치열한 경쟁은 경제성장과 기술혁신, 높은 교육 수준을 이루는 데 중요한 역할을 하였다. 그러나 동시에 저출산과 청년들의 부담, 삶의 만족도와 같은 새로운 사회문제를 함께 만들어 내기도 하였다.
내가 중요하게 생각하는 것은 경쟁 자체를 좋거나 나쁜 것으로 판단하는 것이 아니라, 경쟁이 개인의 성장과 사회의 발전으로 이어지면서도 사람들의 삶의 질과 행복을 함께 높일 수 있는 방향으로 발전하는 것이다.
앞으로 한국 사회는 경쟁과 협력이 조화를 이루는 사회를 만들어 가는 것이 중요한 과제가 될 것이다.

내가 어린 시절을 보냈던 한국은 지금보다 훨씬 가난한 나라였다. 많은 사람들은 열심히 공부하고 성실하게 일하면 자신의 삶뿐 아니라 가족의 미래도 바꿀 수 있다고 믿었다. 나 역시 그러한 시대를 살아오며 교육과 노력의 힘을 직접 경험하였다.
이후 일본과 영국에서 공부하고, 한국과 필리핀의 대학에서 학생들을 가르치며 여러 나라의 교육과 사회를 비교해 볼 기회를 가졌다. 나라마다 경쟁의 모습은 조금씩 달랐지만, 어느 사회에서든 발전을 이루기 위해서는 끊임없는 노력이 필요하다는 사실은 공통적이었다.
그러나 시간이 흐르면서 나는 경쟁만으로는 건강한 사회를 만들 수 없다는 점도 함께 배우게 되었다. 경쟁은 사람들에게 동기를 줄 수 있지만, 협력과 배려, 그리고 서로를 존중하는 문화가 함께할 때 비로소 지속가능한 발전이 가능하다.
한국은 치열한 경쟁을 통해 오늘의 발전을 이루었다. 이제 앞으로는 경쟁에서 한 걸음 더 나아가, 개인의 행복과 공동체의 지속가능성을 함께 추구하는 사회로 발전해 나가기를 기대한다. 그것이 한국 사회의 다음 단계가 아닐까 생각한다.
