The experience of rebuilding the nation and achieving economic growth within a relatively short period encouraged people to value quick decision-making and immediate action.
Today, this culture continues to contribute to Korea’s competitiveness in information technology, logistics, public services, and manufacturing. At the same time, Korean society is increasingly recognising the importance of quality of life, sustainability, and balance alongside speed.

After the Korean War, Korea began rebuilding under extremely difficult economic conditions. With limited resources and an urgent need for national reconstruction, the government, businesses, and the public all worked toward achieving results as quickly as possible.
Industrialisation and urbanisation from the 1960s onward strengthened this tendency. Factories sought to improve productivity, while rapid decision-making and implementation came to be regarded as important sources of competitiveness throughout society.
The development of information and communication technology further accelerated this culture. High-speed internet, mobile payment systems, online shopping, and rapid delivery services became natural parts of everyday life in Korea and later attracted international attention as successful service models.

Understanding Korea’s emphasis on speed and efficiency helps explain how the country achieved rapid economic growth and technological innovation within such a short period.
At the same time, Korean society has entered a new stage in which the central question is no longer simply how quickly progress can be achieved, but how development can become more sustainable and centred on human well-being.
What matters most, in my view, is not speed itself, but the wisdom to recognise when quick action is necessary and when sufficient time and patience are required. True competitiveness comes from achieving an appropriate balance between speed and careful consideration.

While living in different countries, I naturally came to realise that each society has its own way of understanding and using time. Some cultures place greater importance on caution and precision, while others give priority to flexibility and personal relationships.
Whenever I returned to Korea, one of the first things I noticed was how quickly the entire society seemed to move. Public administration, transportation, internet services, and delivery systems operated with remarkable speed, and people often made decisions and completed tasks more quickly than I had experienced elsewhere.
