How Do Koreans Define Success?

Opening Question
Korea is widely known for its highly competitive education system and demanding job market. As a result, many international visitors assume that Koreans place extraordinary importance on success.
They often ask, “What does success mean to Koreans?” or “Are a prestigious university, a good career, and financial wealth considered the main measures of success?”
To answer these questions, it is important to understand both the traditional values that have shaped Korean society and the changing perspectives of younger generations.
A Short Answer
For many years, success in Korea was closely associated with good education, stable employment, financial security, and social recognition.
Today, however, these are no longer the only standards by which people measure a successful life. Increasingly, many Koreans believe that happiness, good health, meaningful relationships, work–life balance, and the freedom to live according to one’s own values are also essential parts of success.
In other words, the definition of success in Korea is becoming more diverse than it was in the past.
Understanding the Background
Following the Korean War, Korea experienced extraordinary economic growth within a relatively short period. Education became one of the most important paths to social mobility, while admission to prestigious universities and employment at respected companies came to symbolise success.
Parents devoted enormous effort to supporting their children’s education, believing that academic achievement would create better opportunities for the next generation. Hard work, discipline, and perseverance became widely respected social values.
As Korean society has matured, however, attitudes have gradually changed. Entrepreneurship, creative careers, sports, public service, personal fulfilment, and quality of life have gained greater recognition, and success is now understood in a broader and more personal way.
A Closer Look
International visitors sometimes ask, “Does this mean that money and social status are no longer important to Koreans?”
Not at all.
Financial stability remains an important goal for many people. However, increasing numbers of Koreans no longer believe that wealth or status alone can guarantee happiness or fulfilment.
Particularly among younger generations, doing meaningful work, maintaining healthy relationships, enjoying leisure time, and pursuing personal interests have become increasingly important measures of success.
As a result, there is no longer a single definition of what it means to succeed in Korea.
What It Means for Understanding Korean Society
Ideas about success reveal what a society values most.
For much of modern Korean history, success was closely connected with economic growth and social achievement. Today, these traditional goals increasingly coexist with values such as personal happiness, self-realisation, mental well-being, and quality of life.
In my view, the most important change is that success is no longer judged by a single standard. Since every person has different dreams, talents, and circumstances, it is natural that success should take many different forms.
Dr. Ryu’s Insight
When I was younger, I tended to think of success in terms of wealth, influence, and social recognition. Like many people of my generation, I naturally believed that obtaining a respected position, achieving financial prosperity, and earning the admiration of others were the clearest signs of a successful life.
As time passed, however, my understanding of success gradually changed. Looking back at the many people I have met throughout my life, I realised that those with great wealth or high social status were not always the happiest. On the other hand, I also met many ordinary people who lived modestly, cared deeply for their families, found satisfaction in their work, and seemed genuinely content with their lives.
Today, I believe that happiness is the most meaningful measure of success. Financial stability is certainly important, but I no longer think success means accumulating endless wealth. If a person can live without serious financial hardship, enjoy peace of mind, maintain good health, cherish family and friends, and spend life doing work they find meaningful, I believe that person has already achieved something truly valuable.
Success is different for every individual. For one person, it may mean becoming an outstanding researcher. For another, it may mean being a devoted parent, a trusted teacher, or simply living each day with purpose and gratitude.
As I have grown older, I have come to realise that success should never be measured by comparison with others. If we are able to appreciate our own lives, remain grateful, and find genuine happiness, then I believe we have already reached one of life’s greatest forms of success.

한국은 치열한 교육 경쟁과 높은 취업 경쟁으로 잘 알려져 있다. 그래서 외국인들은 한국인을 보며 흔히 성공을 매우 중요하게 생각하는 사회라고 말한다. 그래서 외국인들은 종종 이렇게 묻는다.
“한국인에게 성공이란 무엇입니까?”, “좋은 대학과 좋은 직장, 높은 소득이 성공의 기준입니까?”
이 질문에 답하려면 한국 사회가 전통적으로 중요하게 여겨 온 성공의 기준과, 최근 세대가 생각하는 성공의 의미가 어떻게 달라지고 있는지를 함께 살펴볼 필요가 있다.
핵심부터 말하자면
한국 사회에서 성공은 오랫동안 좋은 교육, 안정된 직업, 경제적 안정, 그리고 사회적 인정과 연결되어 왔다. 그러나 최근에는 이러한 기준만으로 성공을 판단하는 사람은 점차 줄어들고 있다.
많은 사람들은 자신의 행복과 건강, 가족과의 시간, 일과 삶의 균형, 그리고 자신이 원하는 삶을 살아가는 것 역시 성공의 중요한 요소라고 생각하기 시작했다.
오늘날 한국 사회에서 성공의 의미는 점점 더 다양해지고 있다.
질문의 배경 이해하기
한국전쟁 이후 한국은 짧은 기간 동안 놀라운 경제성장을 이루었다. 이 과정에서 교육은 사회적 이동의 가장 중요한 수단이 되었고, 좋은 대학과 안정적인 직장은 성공을 상징하는 대표적인 목표가 되었다.
부모들은 자녀에게 더 나은 교육 기회를 제공하기 위해 많은 노력을 기울였고, 개인 역시 성실한 노력으로 자신의 삶을 개선할 수 있다는 믿음을 가지고 살아왔다.
그러나 경제가 성숙하고 사회가 다양해지면서 성공에 대한 인식도 변화하기 시작했다. 창업과 문화예술, 스포츠, 사회적 가치, 개인의 만족과 행복 등 다양한 삶의 방식이 존중받기 시작하면서 성공의 기준도 점차 넓어지고 있다.
조금 더 깊이 들여다보면
외국인들은 때때로 “그렇다면 한국 사람들은 더 이상 돈이나 사회적 지위를 중요하게 생각하지 않는 것입니까?”라고 묻기도 한다.
그렇지는 않다.
경제적 안정은 여전히 많은 사람들에게 중요한 가치이다. 그러나 그것만으로 행복이나 성공이 완성된다고 생각하는 사람은 점차 줄어들고 있다.
특히 젊은 세대는 자신이 좋아하는 일을 하며 의미 있는 삶을 살아가는 것, 충분한 여가를 누리고 건강한 인간관계를 유지하는 것 역시 성공의 중요한 기준으로 생각하는 경우가 많다.
결국 성공의 기준은 한 가지가 아니라 사람마다 다양해지고 있다고 볼 수 있다.
한국 사회를 이해하는 데 어떤 의미가 있는가
성공에 대한 생각은 한 사회가 무엇을 중요하게 여기는지를 보여 준다.
과거 한국 사회는 경제성장과 사회적 성취를 중심으로 성공을 바라보았다. 오늘날에는 여기에 행복과 삶의 질, 공동체, 자기실현이라는 가치가 함께 더해지고 있다.
내가 중요하게 생각하는 것은 성공을 하나의 기준으로만 평가하지 않는 것이다. 사람마다 꿈과 환경이 다르듯이 성공의 모습도 다양할 수 있기 때문이다.
Dr. Ryu’s Insight
젊었을 때 나는 성공을 부와 권력, 그리고 사회적 명예와 같은 기준으로 생각했던 적이 있었다. 좋은 직업을 갖고, 더 높은 자리에 오르며, 경제적으로 풍요롭게 사는 것이 성공한 삶이라고 자연스럽게 믿었던 것이다. 아마 당시의 많은 사람들도 비슷한 생각을 가지고 있었을 것이다.
그러나 시간이 흐르면서 성공에 대한 나의 생각은 조금씩 달라졌다. 살아가면서 만난 사람들을 돌아보면, 큰 부를 이루거나 높은 지위에 오른 사람이라고 해서 반드시 행복한 것은 아니었다. 반대로 특별히 많은 것을 가지지 않았더라도 가족과 함께 평안한 삶을 살아가며 자신의 일에 만족하는 사람들이 오히려 더 행복해 보이는 경우도 적지 않았다.
이제 나는 성공의 가장 중요한 기준은 행복이라고 생각한다. 물론 경제적인 안정은 중요하다. 그러나 그것은 끝없는 부를 추구하는 것이 아니라, 자신과 가족이 생활하는 데 큰 어려움이 없고 마음의 여유를 가질 수 있는 정도이면 충분하다고 생각한다. 그 위에 건강과 가족, 친구, 그리고 자신이 의미 있다고 믿는 일을 하며 살아갈 수 있다면 그것이야말로 성공한 삶이 아닐까 생각한다.
사람마다 꿈과 가치관은 다르다. 어떤 사람에게는 훌륭한 연구자가 되는 것이 성공일 수 있고, 어떤 사람에게는 좋은 부모가 되는 것이 성공일 수도 있다. 또 어떤 사람에게는 자신이 좋아하는 일을 평생 즐기며 살아가는 것이 가장 큰 성공일 수도 있다.
나이가 들면서 내가 새롭게 깨달은 것은 성공은 다른 사람과 비교하여 결정되는 것이 아니라는 점이다. 자신의 삶에 감사하며 행복을 느낄 수 있다면, 그것이야말로 가장 가치 있는 성공이라고 나는 믿는다.
