How Are Traditional Values Changing Among Younger Filipinos?
Opening Question
When Philippine society is discussed, it is often described as placing great importance on family, respect for parents and elders, religious faith, and relationships with the wider community. These values have long been important keys to understanding Filipino culture.
Today’s young Filipinos, however, are growing up in an environment quite different from that of their parents and grandparents. More young people pursue higher education, live in cities, or have family members working overseas. Through smartphones, they encounter cultures and values from the United States, South Korea, Japan, and many other parts of the world in real time. On social media, they can also encounter ideas quite different from those they have learned at home, in school, or in their local communities.
This does not necessarily mean that younger Filipinos are abandoning traditional Filipino values. They may continue to value family while wanting to make their own decisions about careers and personal lives. They may respect their parents without necessarily following every decision their parents would prefer. They may maintain religious traditions while developing different views on marriage, gender roles, or social issues.
Are younger Filipinos, then, moving away from traditional values, or are they adapting and reinterpreting those values to fit the world in which they now live?
A Short Answer
The changing values of younger Filipinos are best understood not simply as an abandonment of tradition, but as a process of adding greater emphasis on personal choice, autonomy, professional achievement, and new social perspectives to long-standing values centered on family and community.
Family remains extremely important. Many young Filipinos maintain close relationships with their parents and consider supporting family members an important responsibility. Working in another city or overseas while helping parents and siblings financially can itself be understood as a continuation of strong family-centered values.
What is changing is the relationship between family responsibility and individual choice. Younger people may place greater importance on making their own decisions about careers, where to live, relationships, marriage, and lifestyle. Respecting one’s parents does not necessarily mean allowing parents to make every important decision.
The central change, therefore, is not a simple choice between “family or the individual.” It is more accurately understood as an ongoing negotiation over how traditional values of family and respect can coexist with greater individual autonomy and personal choice.
Understanding the Background
Traditional Filipino values have long emphasized family ties, respect for elders, mutual assistance, religious faith, and the importance of maintaining relationships with others. Extended family networks—including grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins, and other relatives—can also influence everyday life and important personal decisions.
Within such a culture, individual success has often been difficult to separate entirely from family responsibility. Getting a good job or finding employment overseas may mean not only improving one’s own life but also helping parents or siblings. Family expectations can also influence decisions about education and careers.
The social environment, however, is changing rapidly. Urbanization and domestic and international migration have increased the number of young people living away from their families. Expanding higher education and professional employment have placed greater emphasis on individual careers and achievement. Working or living abroad also provides opportunities to encounter different lifestyles and values.
The digital environment has accelerated these changes. Younger Filipinos now receive cultural influences not only from their families and local communities but also from peers and media around the world. In the past, family, school, church, and community were among the main channels through which values were transmitted. Today, online spaces such as YouTube, Facebook, and TikTok have become additional and powerful influences.
A Closer Look
One area in which change can be seen is personal choice over the direction of one’s life. In earlier generations, family expectations could strongly influence major decisions involving education, careers, and marriage. Such influence has certainly not disappeared, but younger people may increasingly consider their own interests, happiness, and professional goals alongside family expectations.
Ideas about marriage and family life are also changing. Some young adults prefer to achieve greater financial stability before marrying, while others may feel less pressure to establish a family at an early age. As women’s educational attainment and participation in economic life have expanded, expectations about the roles of men and women at home and in the workplace have also become more diverse.
Religion provides another interesting example. Catholicism and other religious traditions remain important influences on Philippine society and family life. Yet it would be too simple to assume that younger Filipinos automatically adopt the positions of religious institutions on every social issue. Religious commitment can remain strong while individuals form their own views on personal and social questions.
Social media has also created a new space in which changing values become visible. Ideas that may be difficult to express within one’s family or local community can now be shared with others online who hold similar views. At the same time, digital culture can create new forms of social pressure, comparison, and conflict. The influence of traditional communities has not simply disappeared; rather, the influence of new digital communities has been added alongside it.
What It Means for Understanding Philippine Society
It would be too simplistic to describe generational change in the Philippines as a conflict between “traditional parents and Westernized young people.” Younger Filipinos still often value their families and parents, participate in family gatherings and religious traditions, and accept responsibilities toward family members.
What is changing is the way these values are practiced. A young person may respect their parents while wanting to choose their own career or marriage partner. They may provide financial support to their family while also insisting on the importance of their own career and personal life. Traditional values and greater individualism can therefore coexist within the same person.
It is also important not to treat younger Filipinos as a single uniform group. A university student in Metro Manila and a young person in a rural community may have very different experiences. The range of choices available to someone from a financially secure family may also differ greatly from those available to someone responsible for supporting their household. Education, income, location, religion, and international exposure can all influence attitudes and values.
The changes among younger generations, therefore, should not necessarily be interpreted as evidence that Filipino culture is disappearing. They are better understood as a process in which traditional values are being reinterpreted within a changing economic, social, and technological environment. The question is increasingly not only which values will be preserved, but how those values will be practiced in contemporary life.
Dr. Ryu’s Insight
During my 15 years living in the Philippines, one thing I noticed from my interactions with students and younger employees was that family continued to occupy a very important place in the lives of young Filipinos. They spoke naturally about their parents and siblings, and I sometimes saw them take their family’s circumstances into consideration when making decisions about work or how to use their money. From what I observed, it would be difficult to say that the younger generation had simply moved away from traditional family-centered values.
However, between 2007, when I first went to the Philippines, and 2021, when I returned to South Korea, the environment in which young people lived changed considerably. Smartphones and social media became part of everyday life, and exposure to cultures and lifestyles from other countries became much easier. Opportunities in education, employment, and overseas work must also have provided younger generations with experiences different from those of their parents. In such an environment, I think it is natural that personal choice—“How do I want to live my life?”—has become increasingly important alongside expectations established by family and society.
South Korea has experienced similar changes. As economic development, urbanization, higher levels of education, and globalization progressed, the views of parents and their children regarding marriage, careers, family responsibilities, and personal life also changed. The pace and form of change may differ, but it would not be surprising to see similar generational changes taking place in the Philippines.
So, when I consider the question, “How are traditional values changing among younger Filipinos?”, I do not think young Filipinos are simply abandoning tradition. Rather, they seem to be reinterpreting traditional values in ways that fit their own lives. They may continue to value family while choosing their own futures, respect their parents while expressing their own opinions, and maintain strong community relationships while also placing greater importance on personal happiness and achievement. In the end, perhaps what is changing is not the values themselves so much as the way younger people understand and practice them.

Dr. Ryu’s Insight
