How Do Overseas Filipinos Promote Philippine Culture Around the World?

Opening Question

Travel through cities around the world, and traces of Philippine culture can often be found more easily than one might expect. Filipino restaurants serve dishes such as adobo, lechon, and pancit, while Filipino grocery stores introduce unfamiliar ingredients and snacks to local customers. On weekends, Filipino communities may gather for basketball games or cultural festivals, while Filipino families come together for Mass at local churches. On YouTube and TikTok, meanwhile, Filipino singers and creators share music and videos with audiences far beyond national borders.

It would be difficult to explain this cultural presence simply as the result of planned promotion by the Philippine government or large companies. Behind it are millions of Filipinos living and working in the United States, Canada, the Middle East, Europe, Japan, South Korea, and many other parts of the world. As they work, raise families, and participate in local communities, they naturally introduce others to their food, music, language, religion, family traditions, and ways of life.

What is particularly interesting is that they do not necessarily think of themselves as cultural ambassadors. Ordinary actions—introducing Filipino food to colleagues, inviting friends to family gatherings, or presenting traditional music and dance at community festivals—may become someone’s first encounter with Philippine culture.

How, then, do Filipinos living around the world promote Philippine culture through their everyday lives and relationships?

A Short Answer

Overseas Filipinos serve as important cultural connectors, introducing Philippine culture to the world through food and music, religion and festivals, family and community activities, popular culture, and increasingly social media.

Food is perhaps one of the most accessible examples. Filipino restaurants, bakeries, and grocery stores often develop around established Filipino communities. Although they may initially serve mainly Filipino customers, they can gradually introduce local residents to dishes such as adobo, lumpia, pancit, sisig, and halo-halo. Diaspora communities have played an important role in bringing these foods into the everyday culinary landscapes of other countries.

Music and performance provide another channel. Singing and karaoke remain common features of Filipino gatherings abroad, while Filipino singers and performers can attract international attention to Philippine talent. Philippine Independence Day celebrations and cultural festivals also provide opportunities to introduce music, dance, traditional clothing, and food to wider audiences.

Digital platforms have greatly expanded this cultural reach. Overseas Filipinos now share food, family life, travel, music, humor, and everyday experiences through YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. In the past, migrants carried their culture primarily into the communities where they settled; today, that culture can spread far beyond those communities through global digital networks.

Understanding the Background

The Philippines has a long history of international migration and overseas employment. Large numbers of Filipinos have lived and worked in the United States, Canada, the Middle East, Europe, and many parts of Asia, while remittances from overseas workers have played an important role in both the Philippine economy and household finances.

Yet focusing only on remittances overlooks another important consequence of migration. When people move, culture moves with them. Migrants and overseas workers carry their food, language, religion, music, family relationships, celebrations, and everyday habits into the societies where they settle.

As Filipino communities become established abroad, these cultural practices can take more organized forms. Philippine Independence Day celebrations, religious gatherings and fiestas, basketball tournaments, musical performances, and Filipino association activities bring communities together and sometimes open Philippine culture to local residents as well.

Second- and third-generation Filipinos also play an important role. Rather than simply preserving the culture of their parents or grandparents unchanged, they often combine their Philippine heritage with the culture of the society in which they were born and raised. Philippine culture abroad is therefore not merely preserved; it is continually reinterpreted and reshaped through interaction with other cultures.

A Closer Look

Food is one of the most effective ways for culture to cross borders because it can be experienced without knowing the language. A dish shared at home can become part of a small catering business or restaurant, and over time it may attract customers outside the Filipino community. Through such everyday processes, Filipino food becomes part of a wider local food culture.

Music also crosses linguistic boundaries relatively easily. Filipino singers and musicians perform internationally, while karaoke and community performances continue to express Filipino social and cultural identity abroad. Social media has further expanded this opportunity: an individual performance uploaded online can now reach an international audience that the performer may never have expected.

Religion and festivals serve both to maintain community ties and to present culture to others. Catholic gatherings, celebrations associated with the Santo Niño, Philippine Independence Day events, and other community festivals allow overseas Filipinos to meet one another while also introducing Philippine traditions to people from other cultural backgrounds.

Cultural transmission abroad, however, does not always reproduce traditions exactly as they exist in the Philippines. Filipino-American food may develop new forms, Filipino musicians may combine Philippine influences with other musical traditions, and younger generations may express their heritage in English or another local language. Diaspora culture is therefore better understood not as a fixed copy of tradition, but as a living culture that continues to change in new environments.

What It Means for Understanding Philippine Society

The cultural role of overseas Filipinos shows that a country’s international influence does not come only from governments, corporations, or major cultural industries. Millions of individuals can create cultural connections simply through the relationships they build in workplaces, schools, neighborhoods, churches, and communities around the world.

This also matters from the perspective of soft power. People’s impressions of a country can be shaped not only by films, music, tourism campaigns, or famous celebrities but also by direct encounters with people from that country. A Filipino colleague, teacher, nurse, caregiver, neighbor, or friend may influence how someone understands the Philippines.

The cultural influence of diaspora communities is especially distinctive because it is often not experienced as formal promotion. People do not encounter Filipino food because an advertisement tells them to try it; they may first taste it while sharing a meal with a Filipino friend. They may experience Filipino music at a community event or discover a festival after being invited by someone they know. Culture can become especially approachable when it is transmitted through relationships between people.

Overseas Filipinos can therefore be understood not only as people who contribute economically to their homeland but also as a vast human network connecting the Philippines with societies around the world. The accumulation of countless small cultural encounters can gradually increase international familiarity with Philippine culture and with the country itself.

Dr. Ryu’s Insight

While living in the Philippines, it was not unusual to hear that someone had a family member working overseas. For that reason, when overseas Filipinos were discussed, OFWs, remittances, and families living apart often came to mind first. But when I think more broadly about the meaning of Filipinos living throughout the world, I believe their role extends beyond economics. They also introduce Philippine culture naturally to the societies in which they live.

The Philippine culture I mean here does not have to be something grand or formally presented. Sharing dishes such as adobo, lumpia, and pancit with family and friends, enjoying singing and karaoke, celebrating Philippine Independence Day or local fiestas, and gathering around churches, families, and community activities are all expressions of Philippine culture. As Filipino communities grow overseas, these foods, music, celebrations, and ways of socializing become visible through Filipino restaurants and grocery stores, community events, churches, and everyday interactions with local residents.

I believe this is one of the most natural ways for a culture to spread beyond national borders. A government does not have to tell people to become interested in the Philippines. Someone may taste Filipino food brought by a colleague, experience karaoke at a Filipino friend’s family gathering, or attend a Filipino festival in the local community. Culture can certainly travel through products and performances, but when it is shared through ordinary relationships between people, it can become much more familiar and personal.

In recent years, the reach of this cultural transmission has expanded dramatically. In the past, overseas Filipinos mainly introduced their culture within the communities where they lived. Today, through platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram, Filipino food, music, dance, humor, family life, and everyday stories can reach audiences far beyond those local communities. A simple video of a meal or a song uploaded by one person abroad may become someone else’s first encounter with the Philippines.

For this reason, I see overseas Filipinos themselves as one of the Philippines’ important cultural assets. Filipino communities around the world continuously introduce Philippine food, music, festivals, family traditions, and community life to the societies around them, while digital technology extends that influence far beyond their immediate surroundings. If the Philippines can connect this diaspora network more effectively with its cultural industries in the future, overseas Filipinos can become more than people who send money home. They can form one of the broadest and most enduring human networks connecting Philippine culture with the rest of the world.

Read This Page in English ↑

Dr. Ryu’s Insight
