Understanding Culture Through Laughter

Laugh with people, not at people.

Understanding another culture does not always have to begin with serious books or difficult subjects.

Sometimes, the words and behaviors we take completely for granted can seem unfamiliar—or even amusing—to people from another country. The same expression can carry a very different meaning across cultures, and different ways of life can lead to unexpected misunderstandings and moments of laughter. Asia with a Smile begins with these small differences.

Why do Koreans eat steaming-hot soup and say, “Ah, so refreshing”? Why can the Japanese expression chotto… sometimes mean “no”? And why does the Christmas season seem to begin in September in the Philippines?

At first, these may simply seem like amusing cultural quirks. But when we ask why, we begin to discover more about a country’s language, history, way of life, and the way people see the world. Perhaps laughter is one of the most comfortable ways to take a first step toward understanding another culture.

Laughing Together, Not Laughing at Others

Cultural differences can easily become the subject of jokes. But this is not a place for treating other people or their ways of life as strange, nor for reducing an entire nationality to a stereotype for the sake of a laugh.

Asia with a Smile is not about laughing at people. It is about the natural humor that emerges when different cultures meet.

Something that seems completely ordinary to me may be fascinating to someone else. And something perfectly normal in another country may look unexpected through my eyes. Rather than asking which way is right or wrong, we can smile and think, “Ah, so there’s another way of seeing it.”

Laugh with people, not at people.

Laughing together while learning to understand one another—that is the most important principle behind Asia with a Smile.

Three Countries, Three Ways to Smile

Asia with a Smile explores amusing and intriguing moments from everyday life in Korea, Japan, and the Philippines. Rather than beginning with grand subjects, it starts with the small things we encounter every day—words and gestures, food and habits, relationships and ordinary ways of life.

As we look at these three countries with a smile, we may discover that behind what first seems simply funny or unusual lies a history, a culture, and a way of life worth understanding.

Korea with a Smile

Rediscovering the Funny Side of the Familiar

Words and behaviors that seem perfectly natural to Koreans can sometimes leave visitors with unexpected questions.

Why do Koreans say, “Let’s have a meal sometime,” without ever setting a date? Why do they eat piping-hot soup and call it “refreshing”? And why do they say “our mother,” “our house,” or “our company” when they really mean “my”?

Here, we take another look—with a smile—at the everyday Korean habits that may be so familiar that Koreans themselves rarely stop to question them.

When Understanding Japan Means Reading Between the Lines

Living in Japan can bring moments when knowing the dictionary meaning of a word is simply not enough.

Why does someone say chotto… and leave the rest of the sentence unsaid? When someone says daijōbu desu—“I’m fine” or “It’s okay”—does it always mean everything is really okay? And why does a convenience-store clerk say so much when all you bought was one small item?

Through these little moments, we take a lighthearted look at the culture and ways of life hidden within everyday Japanese words and behaviors.

Philippines with a Smile

Where Smiles and Songs Are Never Far Away

Living in the Philippines brings many moments that may seem unfamiliar at first but eventually become part of what makes everyday life so memorable.

Does “Filipino Time” really mean being late? Why does everyone seem to become a singer as soon as a karaoke microphone appears? And why can Christmas music already be heard in September, while the weather is still hot?

Through language, family, music, food, and everyday life, we explore the cheerful side of the Philippines—and the culture behind it.

From Amusement to Understanding

Every story in Asia with a Smile begins with a small curiosity. Even something that makes us smile for only a moment can become more meaningful when it leaves us asking, “But why?”

Following that question can lead us deeper into a country’s language, history, culture, and everyday life. What first seemed simply funny or unfamiliar may begin to make sense once we understand the reasons and experiences behind it.

If a story in Asia with a Smile leaves you wanting to know more, the 300 questions in Understanding Korea, Understanding Japan, and Understanding the Philippines offer a deeper journey into the societies and cultures of these three countries.

Start with a smile, then follow the question a little deeper. That is the journey Asia with a Smile hopes to create.

Read This Page in English ↑

Asia with a Smile은 바로 그런 작은 차이에서 시작한다.

Asia with a Smile

Laugh with people, not at people.

이것이 Asia with a Smile이 지키고 싶은 가장 중요한 원칙이다.

Asia with a Smile

Korea with a Smile

Japan with a Smile

Philippines with a Smile

Asia with a Smile

Asia with a Smile에서 생긴 작은 호기심을 조금 더 깊은 이해로 이어가고 싶다면 Understanding Korea, Understanding Japan, Understanding the Philippines의 300개 질문을 통해 세 나라의 사회와 문화를 더 깊이 만나볼 수 있다.

그것이 Asia with a Smile이 만들어 가고 싶은 이야기이다.
