The First Journey into Poetry from Around the World

세계의 시를 찾아가는 첫 번째 여정

In 2026, I begin a long journey of reading poetry from around the world, one poem at a time.

The basic rhythm of this journey will eventually be simple: one poem a week, fifty poems a year. Rather than rushing through many poems, I want to pause with each one and consider where the poet’s words might meet our lives today.

The first year, however, will be a little different. Since this journey begins in August 2026, I plan to read two or three poems each week for the remainder of the year so that we can complete the first fifty poems. Beginning in 2027, the pace will slow to one poem a week, with fifty new poems forming each year’s journey.

Choosing the First Fifty Poems

These first fifty poems mark the beginning of a journey that I hope will continue for many years. It begins with Korean poetry, but it will not remain within the borders of one country. We will encounter poems born in different times and cultures—from Japan and China to other parts of Asia, Europe, North America, Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa.

The poems have not been chosen simply because they are famous. Alongside works that have been read and loved for generations, I want to encounter poems that reveal different cultures, lives, and ways of seeing the world. Above all, the guiding question is whether a poem can still speak to our lives when we read it today.

The selection explores the ten themes of this Poetry project: Love and Connection; Family and the People in Our Lives; Parting and Longing; Life and Time; Nature and the Seasons; The Self and Inner Life; Journeys and Home; Hardship and Hope; Humanity and the World; and Death and the Meaning of Life. A poem may naturally belong to more than one theme, but one central theme will serve as a guide for each reading.

The fifty poems will not be read in blocks arranged by country or theme. Instead, different countries, periods, and stories of life will alternate naturally, with the changing seasons also helping to shape the journey. Moving from one poem to the next should feel a little like traveling to another time and another place.

Fifty Poems, Fifty Pauses

This list is more than a table of contents showing what we will read this year. With each poem, we will meet the life and times behind the poet’s name, look at the country and culture from which the poem emerged, and finally bring the poem back into the context of our own lives today.

The actual reading and reflection on each poem will continue on Dr. Ryu’s Second Life Tistory. As the journey progresses, this page will become a record of the poems encountered throughout 2026.

Not every poem will be approached in exactly the same way. For some, the poet’s life may be especially important. For others, the historical and social setting may offer the key to understanding the work. With poetry written in other languages, we may sometimes look at a word or expression in the original and consider what changes when it is translated.

In the end, however, we will return to the same question:

What does this poem leave with me today?

Beginning the First Fifty Poems of 2026

I do not know whether this journey will truly lead to a thousand poems over the next twenty years. But what matters now is not the thousandth poem waiting somewhere far in the future. It is the first poem in front of us today.

In 2026, we will move a little faster. Because this first year begins in August, we will encounter two or three poems each week and aim to complete our first fifty by the end of the year. Beginning in 2027, we will slow the pace again and meet one poem each week, fifty poems each year.

We read one poem and pause for a while. Then another poem arrives from another country, another period, another human life. Fifty such small encounters will become the record of 2026—and the first chapter of a much longer journey toward a thousand poems from around the world.

세계의 시를 찾아가는 첫 번째 여정

2026년, 세계의 시를 한 편씩 천천히 읽어가는 긴 여정을 시작한다.

앞으로의 기본적인 리듬은 일주일에 한 편, 한 해에 50편이다. 많은 시를 빠르게 읽기보다 한 편의 시 앞에 잠시 머물며, 시인의 언어가 오늘의 삶과 어디에서 만나는지를 생각해 보려 한다.

다만 첫해인 2026년은 8월에 이 여정을 시작한다. 남은 기간에는 일주일에 두세 편씩 조금 더 자주 시를 만나며 첫 50편을 모두 읽어보려 한다. 2027년부터는 다시 속도를 늦추어 일주일에 한 편을 기본으로 매년 새로운 50편의 시를 천천히 이어갈 것이다.

첫 50편을 고르며

첫해의 50편은 앞으로 오랫동안 이어질 시 읽기의 출발점이다. 한국의 시에서 시작하지만 한 나라에 머물지 않는다. 일본과 중국을 비롯한 아시아에서 유럽과 북미, 중남미, 중동과 아프리카에 이르기까지 서로 다른 시대와 문화에서 태어난 시를 함께 만나려 한다.

유명하다는 이유만으로 작품을 선택하지 않았다. 오랫동안 많은 사람에게 읽혀온 작품과 서로 다른 문화의 삶과 생각을 보여주는 작품을 함께 살피면서, 오늘 다시 읽어도 우리의 삶과 연결될 수 있는 시를 중심에 두었다. 특정 국가나 언어권, 시대, 시인에게 지나치게 치우치지 않도록 살피고, 앞으로 이어질 시 읽기에서 같은 작품을 다시 선정하지 않는 것을 원칙으로 한다.

작품들은 사랑과 인연, 가족과 사람, 이별과 그리움, 삶과 시간, 자연과 계절, 나와 내면, 길과 고향, 시련과 희망, 세상과 인간, 죽음과 삶의 의미라는 열 가지 주제를 두루 만나도록 구성하였다. 한 편의 시가 여러 주제를 품고 있는 경우에는 그 가운데 이번 읽기에서 가장 중심적으로 생각해 볼 하나의 주제를 길잡이로 삼는다.

50편을 주제별이나 국가별로 묶어 차례대로 읽지는 않는다. 서로 다른 나라와 시대, 서로 다른 삶의 이야기가 자연스럽게 이어지도록 하면서 계절의 변화도 함께 생각한다. 다음 작품으로 넘어갈 때마다 또 다른 시대와 장소로 작은 여행을 떠나는 마음으로 읽어가려 한다.

50편, 50번의 멈춤

이 목록은 단순히 올해 읽을 작품의 차례를 보여주는 목차가 아니다. 한 편씩 읽어갈 때마다 작품명과 시인의 이름 뒤에 숨어 있던 한 사람의 삶과 시대를 만나고, 그 시가 건너온 나라와 문화를 살펴본 뒤, 마지막에는 그 시를 다시 오늘의 삶으로 가져오려 한다.

각 작품에 대한 실제 읽기와 이야기는 Dr. Ryu’s Second Life의 Tistory에서 이어간다. 한 편의 글이 발행될 때마다 이 페이지의 작품과 시인 이름에 해당 Tistory 글을 연결한다. 그렇게 한 편씩 링크가 더해지면서 이 목록 자체가 2026년의 시 읽기 기록이 된다.

모든 작품을 같은 방식으로 읽지는 않을 것이다. 어떤 작품에서는 시인의 삶이 중요할 수 있고, 어떤 작품에서는 작품이 태어난 시대와 사회가 중요할 수도 있다. 외국의 시에서는 원문의 한 단어나 표현과 번역 사이의 차이를 살펴볼 수도 있다. 그러나 마지막에는 언제나 같은 질문으로 돌아오려 한다.

이 시가 오늘 나에게 무엇을 남기는가.

2026년, 첫 번째 50편을 시작하며

앞으로 20년에 걸쳐 정말 1,000편의 시를 만날 수 있을지는 알 수 없다. 그러나 지금 중요한 것은 먼 훗날의 천 번째 작품이 아니라 우리 앞에 놓인 첫 번째 한 편이다.

2026년에는 조금 빠르게 걷는다. 8월에 시작하는 첫해인 만큼 일주일에 두세 편을 만나며 연말까지 첫 50편의 여정을 마치려 한다. 그리고 2027년부터는 다시 속도를 늦추어 일주일에 한 편씩, 한 해에 50편의 시를 만나게 된다.

한 편을 읽고 잠시 머문다. 그리고 또 다른 나라, 또 다른 시대, 또 다른 삶에서 건너온 한 편을 만난다. 그렇게 50번의 작은 만남이 모여 2026년의 기록이 되고, 언젠가 세계의 시 1,000편을 향해 이어질 긴 여행의 첫 장이 된다.
