When I Am Unsure Which Path to Take
Throughout life, we are constantly making choices, both large and small. Some decisions come easily, while others leave us uncertain for a long time because it is difficult to know which path is better. This is especially true when a single decision may significantly shape the life ahead—whether to continue in a familiar role or take a new direction, where to live, or whom to share our lives with.
I, too, have spent a great deal of time thinking over important decisions. There have been times when, even after careful consideration, I wondered whether I should have chosen differently. At other times, instead of asking what was right, I may have focused first on how to avoid failure. And perhaps there were moments when I had already decided what I wanted and simply hoped to convince myself that it was the right choice.
Perhaps decisions are difficult because we cannot see the future. No matter how much information we gather or how much advice we receive, we can never know every consequence in advance. Every choice brings something into our lives and asks us to leave something else behind. Sometimes, whichever path we choose, a certain amount of uncertainty or regret may remain.
So when I face an important decision, rather than asking God simply to give me the right answer, I want to ask for the wisdom to set aside my own desires and fears long enough to see more clearly what is right. I want to think carefully without remaining trapped in hesitation, and once I have made a decision, I want the courage to accept responsibility for it and move forward.
A Prayer When I Face an Important Decision
Loving God,
I stand before an important decision.
It is difficult to know which path is better,
and at times my heart is unsettled
by the fear that I may make the wrong choice.
Do not let my own desires cloud my judgment,
or fear keep me from doing what needs to be done.
Help me think first about what is right
rather than being guided by the expectations or opinions of others.
Keep me from seeing only what I want to see
or listening only to what I want to hear.
Give me the wisdom to look calmly at the facts before me
and to listen with an open heart to the advice of others.
When I need to wait, give me the patience to wait.
When the time comes to decide,
keep me from remaining trapped in endless worry and hesitation.
Rather than insisting only on the path I want,
help me consider where Your will may be leading me,
and help me remember the people and responsibilities
that have been entrusted to my care.
Teach me to accept that I cannot know every outcome in advance.
After I have thought carefully and prayed,
give me the courage to walk the path I choose
with faith and responsibility.
I place my thoughts and my decision in Your hands.
In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
Moving Forward After the Decision
When I face an important choice, I naturally wonder, “Which decision will lead to the best outcome?” Yet when I look back on my life, I can see that some choices that once seemed like mistakes eventually opened unexpected doors, while choices I believed were clearly right sometimes led to difficulties I had never anticipated. Perhaps what I can do is not predict the future perfectly, but carefully consider what I can know today, reflect honestly on what truly matters, and then make the best decision I can.
Once I have decided, I want to spend less time looking back at the road I did not take and more time trying to make the road I chose into a good one. Of course, if I later realize that I made the wrong decision, I can change direction. Responsibility does not mean stubbornly continuing down a path simply because I once chose it. Recognizing a mistake and choosing again can also require courage. When I stand before an important decision, I want to remember this one line:
“Lord, give me the wisdom to see the right path, not simply the path I want.”
I cannot make every choice knowing all the answers. Still, I can think carefully, pray, decide, and then take a step forward. Along the way, I can continue to learn, pray again, and seek the next step.
Pray, choose, and walk forward with responsibility.

어느 길을 선택해야 할지 모를 때
살아가면서 크고 작은 선택을 끊임없이 하게 된다. 어떤 선택은 쉽게 결정할 수 있지만, 어느 쪽이 더 나은지 알기 어려워 오랫동안 마음이 흔들리는 순간도 있다. 일을 계속할 것인지 새로운 길을 선택할 것인지, 어디에서 살아갈 것인지, 어떤 사람과 함께할 것인지처럼 한 번의 결정이 앞으로의 삶에 적지 않은 영향을 미칠 때에는 더욱 그렇다.
나 역시 중요한 선택 앞에서 많은 고민을 해왔다. 충분히 생각했다고 여겼는데도 결정을 내리고 나면 다른 길을 선택했어야 하지 않았을까 생각한 적이 있고, 때로는 무엇이 옳은지를 생각하기보다 실패하지 않을 방법부터 찾으려 했던 순간도 있었다. 내가 원하는 것을 이미 마음속으로 정해놓고 그것이 옳은 선택이라고 믿고 싶었던 때도 있었을 것이다.
선택이 어려운 것은 미래를 미리 알 수 없기 때문일지도 모른다. 아무리 많은 정보를 모으고 여러 사람의 이야기를 들어도 결정의 결과를 완전히 알 수는 없다. 모든 선택에는 얻는 것이 있고 내려놓아야 하는 것이 있으며, 때로는 어느 쪽을 선택해도 아쉬움이 남는다.
그래서 중요한 결정을 앞두었을 때에는 정답을 알려달라고 기도하기보다, 내 욕심과 두려움을 잠시 내려놓고 무엇이 옳은지를 바라볼 수 있는 지혜를 구하고 싶다. 충분히 생각하되 지나치게 망설이지 않고, 결정한 뒤에는 그 선택에 책임을 지며 앞으로 걸어갈 수 있는 용기도 함께 구하고 싶다.
중요한 선택 앞에서 드리는 기도
사랑의 하나님,
지금 저는 중요한 선택 앞에 서 있습니다.
어느 길이 더 좋은지 알기 어렵고,
잘못된 선택을 하지는 않을까 하는 두려움으로
마음이 흔들릴 때가 있습니다.
제 욕심이 판단을 흐리지 않게 하시고,
두려움 때문에 해야 할 일을 피하지 않게 하시며,
다른 사람의 시선이나 기대보다
무엇이 옳은지를 먼저 생각하게 하여 주옵소서.
제가 보고 싶은 것만 보지 않게 하시고,
듣고 싶은 말만 듣지 않게 하시며,
필요한 사실을 차분히 살펴보고
다른 사람의 조언에도 귀 기울일 수 있는 지혜를 주옵소서.
서두르지 말아야 할 때에는 기다릴 수 있게 하시고,
결정해야 할 때에는 지나친 걱정과 망설임에 머물지 않게 하여 주옵소서.
제가 원하는 길만을 고집하기보다
주님의 뜻이 어디에 있는지 생각하게 하시고,
제게 맡겨진 사람들과 책임도 함께 헤아리게 하여 주옵소서.
모든 결과를 미리 알 수 없음을 받아들이게 하시며,
충분히 생각하고 기도한 뒤에는
선택한 길을 믿음과 책임으로 걸어갈 용기를 허락하여 주옵소서.
저의 생각과 선택을 주님께 맡깁니다.

선택한 뒤에는 앞으로 걸어가며
중요한 선택을 앞두면 ‘어떤 결정이 가장 좋은 결과를 가져올까’를 생각하게 된다. 그러나 지나온 삶을 돌아보면 당시에는 잘못된 선택처럼 보였던 일이 새로운 길을 열어주기도 하였고, 가장 좋은 선택이라고 믿었던 일이 예상하지 못한 어려움으로 이어진 적도 있었다.
결국 내가 할 수 있는 것은 미래를 완벽하게 예측하는 것이 아니라, 지금 알 수 있는 것을 충분히 살펴보고, 내가 중요하게 생각해야 할 것이 무엇인지 돌아본 뒤 정직하게 선택하는 것일 것이다. 그리고 결정한 뒤에는 선택하지 않은 길을 계속 돌아보기보다 내가 선택한 길을 좋은 길로 만들어가기 위해 노력하고 싶다.
물론 잘못된 선택이었다는 것을 깨닫는다면 방향을 바꿀 수도 있다. 한 번 결정했다고 해서 끝까지 고집하는 것이 책임은 아닐 것이다. 잘못을 인정하고 다시 선택하는 것 역시 삶에서 필요한 용기라고 생각한다. 중요한 선택 앞에서 이 한마디를 기억하고 싶다.
“주님, 제가 원하는 길보다 옳은 길을 볼 수 있는 지혜를 주옵소서.”
모든 답을 알고 선택할 수는 없다. 그래도 충분히 생각하고, 기도하고, 결정한 뒤에는 한 걸음 내딛는다. 그리고 그 길에서 다시 배우고 기도하며 다음 걸음을 찾아간다.
기도하고, 선택하고, 책임 있게 걸어간다.
