인생 제1막을 돌아보며
사람들은 종종 현재의 모습을 통해 한 사람을 이해하려고 한다. 그러나 지금의 나는 하루아침에 만들어진 것이 아니다.
나의 첫 번째 인생은 한국에서 시작되었고, 일본에서 연구자로 성장했으며, 영국에서 더 넓은 학문의 세계를 경험하였다. 다시 한국으로 돌아와 새로운 도전을 시작했고, 이후 필리핀에서 교육과 대학행정, 그리고 사업을 통해 또 다른 삶을 살아갔다.
돌이켜보면 이 모든 과정은 각각 독립된 사건이 아니라 하나의 긴 여정이었다. 그때는 단지 눈앞의 길을 따라 걸어갔을 뿐이었지만, 지금 와서 보면 모든 경험은 서로 연결되어 오늘의 나를 만들고 있었다.
이 페이지는 그 첫 번째 여정을 시간의 흐름에 따라 기록한 이야기이다.
Looking Back at the First Chapter
People often try to understand someone by looking only at who they are today. Yet the person I am now was not shaped overnight.
The first chapter of my life began in Korea, where I was born and raised. It continued in Japan, where I grew into a researcher, and then in the United Kingdom, where I broadened my academic horizons. Returning to Korea, I embraced new challenges, and later found another chapter of life in the Philippines through education, university administration, and entrepreneurship.
Looking back, I realize that these were not isolated episodes but parts of one continuous journey. At the time, I simply followed the path that lay before me. Only now can I see how each experience became connected, gradually shaping the person I am today.
This section is a record of that first journey, told in the order that life unfolded.
왜 이 이야기를 남기는가?
이 이야기는 단순한 회고록이 아니다. 특별한 성공담을 들려주기 위해서도 아니고, 누군가에게 같은 길을 걸으라고 말하기 위해서도 아니다. 오히려 시대와 환경이 달라져도 사람은 어떻게 배우고, 선택하며, 실패하고, 다시 일어설 수 있는지를 함께 생각해 보고 싶었다. 누군가에게는 지나간 이야기일 수 있지만, 또 다른 누군가에게는 지금 시작하고 있는 이야기일 수도 있다. 만약 이 기록이 자신의 삶을 돌아보거나 새로운 길을 준비하는 사람에게 작은 용기와 희망이 된다면, 그것만으로도 충분한 의미가 있다고 생각한다.
Why I Chose to Share This Story
This is not simply a memoir. It is not intended to tell a story of extraordinary success, nor is it meant to suggest that others should follow the same path. Instead, I hope it encourages readers to reflect on how people continue to learn, make choices, face setbacks, and begin again, even as times and circumstances change. For some, these pages may tell a story that belongs to the past. For others, they may resemble a journey that is only just beginning.
If these reflections offer even a small measure of encouragement or hope to someone looking back on their own life or preparing for a new chapter, then I will consider this journey well worth sharing.

인생 제1막을 마치며
한국에서 시작된 나의 여정은 일본과 영국, 필리핀과 아부다비를 지나 다시 한국으로 돌아왔다.
그 길은 처음부터 계획된 것이 아니었다. 때로는 선택이었고, 때로는 뜻밖의 기회였으며, 때로는 피할 수 없는 변화였다. 그러나 각각의 경험은 사람을 이해하고, 다른 문화를 받아들이며, 새로운 환경 속에서 다시 배우는 법을 가르쳐 주었다.
돌이켜보면 인생 제1막은 성공과 실패로만 나눌 수 있는 시간이 아니었다. 그것은 수많은 만남과 선택, 도전과 배움이 서로 연결되어 오늘의 나를 만들어 온 과정이었다.
이제 첫 번째 장을 덮지만, 여정이 끝나는 것은 아니다. 지나온 경험을 돌아보고 그 의미를 새롭게 발견하면서, 나는 다시 인생의 다음 장을 시작하려 한다.
끝은 때로 새로운 시작을 위한 가장 조용한 문이 된다.

Closing the First Chapter
My journey began in Korea, continued through Japan and the United Kingdom, and later took me to the Philippines and Abu Dhabi before eventually bringing me home again.
It was not a path that had been planned from the beginning. At times, it was shaped by personal choices; at other times, by unexpected opportunities or changes I could not avoid. Yet each experience taught me how to understand people, embrace different cultures, and begin learning again in unfamiliar surroundings.
Looking back, the first chapter of my life cannot be described simply in terms of success or failure. It was a process in which countless encounters, choices, challenges, and lessons became connected and gradually shaped the person I am today.
I now close this first chapter, but the journey itself is not over. By looking back on what I have lived and rediscovering its meaning, I am preparing to begin the next chapter of my life.
An ending can sometimes become the quietest doorway to a new beginning.
