AI Says, “Start Your Second Act.” My Back Says, “Lie Down First.”

Mr. Oh began using AI seriously after retirement. He did not have any particular goal in mind at first. He had simply heard people talking about using AI to write, plan trips, study foreign languages, create images, and even come up with new business ideas, so he wanted to see what all the excitement was about. He opened an AI assistant on his phone and spent a while wondering what to ask. Eventually, he typed a question that had been on his mind quite often lately: “Is there anything new I can start in my sixties?” The answer appeared almost instantly. Content creation, blogging, YouTube, e-books, online courses, language learning, travel content, consulting, small online businesses—the possibilities seemed endless. Mr. Oh kept scrolling until he began to laugh. He had asked one casual question about what he might do next, and AI had already prepared dozens of possibilities for him. I asked one question. AI had already planned my entire second act.

What impressed Mr. Oh most was AI’s attitude toward his age. It did not treat being in his sixties as a disadvantage. Instead, it suggested that decades of accumulated experience and knowledge could become strengths, and that the things he had learned and done throughout his life might be turned into digital content or connected to new opportunities. One sentence in particular caught his attention: “It is not too late to start.” Mr. Oh read it twice. After retirement, the advice he usually heard from people around him sounded more like, “You should take it easy now,” “Just look after your health,” or “Why start something new at your age?” AI was different. It did not tell him to rest. It told him to begin—to learn something new, organize what he already knew, and find new ways to connect with the world. For a moment, Mr. Oh felt several years younger. Perhaps there were still many things he could do. Perhaps this really could be the beginning of something new.

That evening, Mr. Oh enthusiastically told his wife about all the possibilities he had discovered. “I asked AI, and apparently there are so many things people our age can do. I could start a blog or YouTube channel, or organize what I know and turn it into an e-book.” His wife, clearing the dinner table, replied, “Really? Sounds good.” Encouraged, Mr. Oh continued. AI had also suggested online courses, learning another language and creating something for an international audience, or even traveling and turning those experiences into content. His wife listened for a while before asking a very practical question: “So what are you actually going to do?” Mr. Oh answered confidently, “First, I’m going to look into all of it.” She followed up with another question. “And what did you do today?” Mr. Oh paused. He had not started a blog, filmed a video, or written a single line of an e-book. In fact, there was only one thing he had actually done. “I talked to AI.” His wife nodded silently, with the expression of someone who had just discovered that the definition of “getting started” was much broader than she had previously imagined.

The next morning, Mr. Oh decided that this time he really would begin his second-act project. He asked AI, “Create a one-year plan to help me start something new.” Within seconds, a twelve-month roadmap appeared. The first month was for identifying goals and interests, the second for learning necessary skills, the third for beginning content production, followed by launching a blog or video channel and testing possible ways to generate income. Impressed, Mr. Oh asked for a weekly plan. AI immediately organized tasks from Monday through Sunday. Then he asked for a daily schedule, and AI divided his day into morning exercise, study, content creation, reading, rest, and planning. Mr. Oh stared at the screen with a mixture of admiration and exhaustion. He had asked for one plan, but plans seemed to be reproducing inside it. When you ask AI for a plan, it doesn’t just give you a plan. It gives you the plan’s children and grandchildren too.

The trouble began when Mr. Oh tried to apply the plan to real life. AI’s first recommended habit was morning exercise. Starting the day with some light stretching and a thirty-minute walk sounded perfectly reasonable. Mr. Oh agreed completely. After all, he needed to stay healthy if he wanted to begin something new. The next morning, his alarm went off and he opened his eyes, ready to follow the schedule. His back, however, seemed to wake up before the rest of him. He had done nothing particularly strenuous the day before, yet his body felt strangely stiff, and straightening his back after getting out of bed took longer than expected. Sitting on the edge of the bed, he checked the schedule saved on his phone: “7:00 a.m. Wake up. 7:10 Stretching. 7:30 Walking.” The clock already said 7:28. According to AI’s schedule, he should have been putting on his walking shoes. In reality, he was still sitting beside the bed, slowly negotiating with his lower back. AI wanted me stretching at 7:10. My back was still somewhere around 6:50.

Still, he could not give up on the very first day. Mr. Oh changed into exercise clothes and went outside. AI had recommended about thirty minutes of walking, and the first ten minutes went surprisingly well. The air was pleasant, and his body gradually began to loosen up. Around the fifteen-minute mark, however, his knees quietly announced their presence. By twenty minutes, the distance back home had become more important than the benefits of exercise. Spotting a bench, Mr. Oh sat down and opened AI on his phone. “Is it okay for someone in their sixties to walk thirty minutes every day?” he asked. Suddenly, AI became extremely cautious. It advised him to consider his individual physical condition, increase activity gradually, avoid overexertion, rest if he experienced discomfort, and consult a professional if necessary. Mr. Oh stared at the screen and muttered, “You were the one who told me to do it.” The AI that had created the exercise plan sounded like a fitness coach. The AI he spoke to after his body started complaining suddenly sounded like a very cautious doctor.

When Mr. Oh returned home, his wife asked, “Did you walk for thirty minutes?” Taking off his shoes, he answered, “Almost.” She immediately asked, “How many minutes is ‘almost’?” After doing a quick calculation, he explained, “I walked for about twenty-two minutes, and I spent eight minutes sitting on a bench doing research about my health.” His wife looked at him for a moment and said, “Then that’s thirty minutes.” Mr. Oh nodded approvingly. There were advantages to living with someone for a long time: a spouse knew how to reconcile the difference between a plan and reality. AI had prescribed thirty minutes of exercise, while his wife was willing to accept twenty-two minutes of walking plus eight minutes of sitting as a completed thirty-minute session. From that day on, Mr. Oh decided that AI was in charge of planning, while his wife was in charge of performance evaluation.

After exercise came study. AI had suggested that learning new skills consistently for an hour or two each day would be useful, so Mr. Oh opened his laptop and began researching AI, blogging, and video production. The problem was that every article he read introduced three unfamiliar terms, and searching for those terms led to even more tools and services. To run a blog, he apparently needed to understand SEO. To make videos, he needed editing software. To create images, he needed to learn image-generation tools. When he searched for ways to earn money online, he discovered advertising, affiliate marketing, digital products, newsletters, and several other worlds he had not known existed. Two hours later, more than twenty browser tabs were open, and his list of things to learn had roughly doubled. He had not published a blog post or created a video, yet somehow he felt as though he had worked all day. He had barely begun preparing for his second act, and his computer’s memory was already getting tired before he was.

For the next several days, Mr. Oh worked very hard—mostly by talking to AI. He generated names for a website, chose possible blog topics, brainstormed YouTube ideas, and even drafted an outline for an e-book. The problem was that AI was almost too hardworking. Whenever Mr. Oh offered one idea, it suggested ten more. Whenever he asked, “Would this work too?” AI analyzed the advantages and disadvantages and then added a step-by-step implementation plan. One day, feeling overwhelmed, he asked, “Can you organize the projects I could do in order of priority?” He assumed this would reduce the number of possibilities. Instead, AI helpfully produced a list numbered from one to ten. Mr. Oh stared at it. He had asked for fewer projects, and somehow the projects had returned more clearly organized and professionally numbered. The frightening thing about AI was not simply that it never got tired when you gave it work. It never got tired when you asked it for ideas either.

That evening, his wife asked, “What are you doing with that AI all the time?” Mr. Oh replied, “I’m organizing what I’m going to do from now on.” She asked whether he had finished organizing it. Mr. Oh looked at the screen. Website, blog, YouTube, e-book, online course, language study, travel content—the list stretched down the page. “Almost,” he said. His wife glanced at the screen and asked, “How many of those are you planning to do?” Mr. Oh hesitated before answering, “About seven?” She stared at him for several seconds and then quietly asked, “You are retired, right?” Mr. Oh did not answer. Come to think of it, even when he had been working full-time, he could not remember managing seven projects at once. Retirement was supposed to give him more free time. Somehow, after meeting AI, he had become busier than when he had a job.

Eventually, Mr. Oh turned to AI for help again. “I’m exhausted trying to do too many things at once. What should I do?” As always, AI immediately offered excellent advice. Do not try to do everything at once, it said. Focus on one or two priorities, allow yourself enough rest, and work at a sustainable pace. Mr. Oh stared at the screen, slightly offended. Who had suggested the website, the blog, the videos, the foreign-language study, the e-book, and all the other possibilities in the first place? Of course, when he thought about it carefully, AI had not actually forced him to do any of them. It had simply answered every question he asked. Human beings, however, have an interesting habit: we ask too many questions, receive too many answers, and then blame the one who answered them.

From that day on, Mr. Oh began adjusting his plans to fit real life. Instead of insisting on a brisk thirty-minute walk every morning, he allowed himself twenty to thirty minutes at a comfortable pace depending on how his body felt. Instead of trying to learn three new skills in one day, he chose one. Instead of running seven projects simultaneously, he decided to begin with one and move on only after it was reasonably established. Even the questions he asked AI began to change. Previously, he had asked, “What else could I do?” Now he asked, “Which of the things I’m already doing could I stop doing?” Strangely enough, once the question changed, AI’s answers changed too. Instead of adding more tasks, it began helping him remove them. Mr. Oh finally understood something important. AI is very good at giving you more to do, but it is also quite good at helping you do less. You just have to ask it to.

Over the next few weeks, Mr. Oh gradually found a new rhythm. He moved gently in the morning according to how his body felt, spent the morning learning or creating one thing at a time, and used the afternoon for walking or reading. He stopped making plans that required ten achievements before dinner. Surprisingly, once he reduced the number of things he intended to do, he actually completed more of them. AI continued to offer an endless supply of ideas, but Mr. Oh no longer believed he had to act on every one. If an idea sounded useful, he saved it for later and chose only what mattered now. AI might be capable of thinking twenty-four hours a day, but that did not mean he had to keep up with it. AI needed a battery. Mr. Oh needed a nap.

One day, partly as a joke, Mr. Oh asked AI, “What is the most important thing if I want to keep taking on new challenges after sixty?” AI replied that he should make use of his experience, continue learning, take care of his health, and move forward at a sustainable pace. Mr. Oh paused at the phrase “a sustainable pace.” When he had first started using AI, the words he most wanted to hear were, “It’s not too late.” He still believed that. But now he understood the next part as well. It’s not too late does not mean you need to hurry. Being able to start something new does not mean everything has to be started today.

That evening, Mr. Oh sat on the sofa with his laptop on his knees and asked AI to organize his schedule for the following week. Within seconds, a neat plan appeared from Monday through Sunday: exercise, study, content creation, reading, organizing materials, and reviewing new project ideas. Mr. Oh read through it approvingly, then straightened his back and groaned, “Ouch.” His wife, watching television beside him, asked what was wrong. “My back feels a little stiff.” She glanced at the laptop. “What are you doing with AI now?” He explained that he was planning the next week, then began reading the schedule aloud. Exercise and writing on Monday, video study on Tuesday, new-project research on Wednesday, and so on. His wife asked, “What about Sunday?” Mr. Oh scrolled down. “Weekly performance review and planning for the following week.” His wife looked at him for a moment and asked, “So when do you rest?”

Mr. Oh slowly scrolled up and down.

There was no rest day.

After thinking for a moment, he typed another question: “When should I rest?” AI immediately responded that adequate rest was essential for long-term productivity and health and that intentional rest should be included in any sustainable schedule. Mr. Oh read the answer carefully. There was nothing wrong with it. It was sensible, thoughtful, excellent advice. He had only one question.

“If rest is that important, why didn’t you put it in the first schedule?”

His wife burst out laughing, and eventually Mr. Oh did too. He closed the laptop and leaned back against the sofa, searching for the most comfortable position. His wife asked, “So what are you going to do now?” With his eyes closed, Mr. Oh said, “AI keeps telling me to start things….” He paused, shifted his lower back slightly, and finally found the perfect position.

Then he added very seriously:

“My back says we should lie down first.”

His wife laughed. “Whose advice are you going to follow today?”

Mr. Oh did not need time to think.

“My back’s.”

He placed the laptop on the table and stretched out comfortably on the sofa. AI had not been wrong. It was not too late to begin something new. There were still many things to learn and plenty of possibilities worth exploring. AI had even helped him rediscover the feeling that he could begin again. There was simply one thing Mr. Oh had that AI did not.

A lower back.

With his eyes closed, Mr. Oh thought about his second act. He really could learn new technologies, create something new, and find ways to share the experiences he had accumulated over a lifetime. But there was no reason he had to move at the same speed he once had when he was younger. No matter how many possibilities AI presented, he was still the one who had to decide which road to take and how fast to walk it. Perhaps the important thing in a second act was not how quickly you started, but how long you could keep going at a pace your body was willing to follow.

Just then, his phone made a notification sound from the table. Mr. Oh did not open his eyes. His wife glanced at the screen and teasingly asked, “Is that AI?”

Still lying on the sofa without moving, Mr. Oh replied:

“Tell it to wait. My back and I are in a meeting.”

His wife burst out laughing again. Mr. Oh smiled with his eyes still closed.

His second act could begin again tomorrow.

AI would still be there.
